So having bought the car (everything seems fine and I love it) believing that it has its 'CATS' removed, I had arranged today to collect the 'CATS' from the previous seller.

I Had it up in the air at a friends garage beforehand just to generally check the underneath condition and run a diagnostic (Engine light was on sometimes).

Emissions had thrown up 2 faults. This might make sense if the CATS were removed. Anyway, we had a look, and as per the pictures, I believe the entire exhaust to be as it left the factory, with the exception of the back boxes having been removed. I cannot tell if the primary CATS are gone as the welding from the entire system, besides where the back boxes are gone, seems pristine. As it happens when I arrived to collect them, they were back boxes.

So ok, I feel no need to put them back on, but if the rest of the system is standard and it was recently serviced, what reasons could there be for the emissions code? It does also smell quite rich on startup, though I only drive it once or twice a week and not for more than an hour at a time.

All cars smell rich on startup, that's normal IMHO.
Can't help (no help!) more than that.
You could try the MBclub or other marque specific forums.

Good luck with your diagnosing.

Cheers,

I can't help but be confused by the first picture I posted. The 'black' area of the pipe is surely where the first primary CAT goes go, hence the plastic guard being fairly wide there. I just see a normal pipe with the 2 O2 sensors plugging in.

Is it a diesel? If so then buy a DPF as this will filter any dirty particles in the smoke and therefore will clear any emissions codes. If it is petrol then get an air performance filter to filter out all the dirt from the gas.
It is a CLS500 petrol.

Am I right in thinking that primary CATS are not really very specific? As long as they fit the pipe diameter, I don't need it to be MB etc?

Hi Donk,

As per the 1st picture, I think it is the removal of the primary CATS which is the cause?
