Hi guys,

We have a M140i winging it's way around May time.

However, as I already have a 1series Coupe I'm thinking about selling it and going for something to have summer fun in for the family.

The E class Convertible seems to fill the gap nicely. Four seats, specced and from what I gather a fairly refined car when it comes to top up or top down motoring.

Anyone have advice for the best engine petrol wise? Mpg combined with power etc.

Also is the wind deflector standard on these?

Thanks

I've got the 5.5 n/a V8 in mg E Class and, short of an AMG, it's a cracker.

380 bhp, low 5's to 60, 11-something to 100.

AMG's give you a load more power and drama but the regular 5.5 is excellent.

There are loads of 5.5 coupes out there too so prices are good.

The counter argument is that for another 20% or so you can have the full fat AMG.

When I chose I could get a 7 year old 212 5.5 on 53k or an 8/9 year old 211 E63 on 80-90k so I chose newer/lower mileage.

I'm fairly sure they didn't do a 'proper' AMG on the E coupe/cabriolet. They did a NA 500 (later ones were 4.7 twin turbo V8) but the 4.7s are few and far between. The 4.7 is much better on fuel than the 5.5, but precise figures will depend on driving style. You'll probably have to wait a long time for the right-spec 4.7 to come on the market unless you're very lucky.

There are a few 3.5 petrols about. I know you say petrol but I know somebody who initially wanted (when they were new) a 350 petrol coupe, but also test drove a 350 diesel and preferred the torque of the diesel and ended up buying that, despite havinvg said he didn't want diesel. No idea what the sound track would be like with the roof down though, however, might be preferable to a 4-cylinder petrol.

Didn't realise they didn't do an E63 version of the coupe/vert.

The 350 diesel sound OK for a diesel and, yes, is more torquey than the 350 petrol and low down torque suits the car. BUT I'd personally not want a diesel convertible. Strikes me as a very odd combo.

Given that I'd always go for the 5.5. or 4.7 petrol.

Here's a 4.7. Not to sure about the colour, nothing wrong with that engine though!
