I know, how the hell do we know without hearing...bear with me...

The car is under warranty and due a service soon but I find that sometimes my main dealer requires a little direction to solve problems, and I wondered if anyone has suffered similar.

Car has only covered 12500 miles, when going over potholes at low speed it makes a noise that my wife perfectly described as sounding like two snooker balls clicking together, from the front drivers side.

- I cannot figure out if it's from behind the dash pod, or from the suspension/engine bay/elsewhere.
- Doesn't happen going over speed bumps, only when going over rough jarring roads or hitting potholes.
- At higher speeds, I either can't hear it or it's not present, tbh it could be either as the tyre noise at speed might drown it out anyway.

Noises bother me, and if there's anything simple or common I can do to check then I'll do it myself before throwing the car at the dealer several times until they sort it smile

Any ideas fellow Mercedes owners? (don't tell me to buy a Lexus)

This won't be much help, but my 2013 C63 Coupe has developed a similar noise over the past year. I just can't pinpoint it but I firmly believe it's cosmetic/trim related. Drives me nuts and reminds me of the Sierras I owned back in the day.

Is the cover for the ODB socket open ?

Took me weeks to figure this out on my CLS when dealer couldn't get to the bottom of it.

Check the passengers seat belt, I found with no one sat in the seat the metal buckle could sit at an angle and tap on the B pillar trim

My GL had a similar clunk from the front end that only occurred when I drove from a level surface onto the downward sloping ramp in the car park at low speed - MB replaced the drop links FOC under warranty on the front which was a “if customer complains of noise, do X” type of recall or standing instruction. May be worth enquiring if there’s a similar issue with the CLS drop links.

Thanks folks.

I didn't think of the OBD port being under there so I'll get a torch and get upside-down in the footwell to have a look, I've been pushing and prodding at everything from the front/top so far. Failing that, I may as well book it in under warranty if it sounds like Merc are happy to replace such things, good to know that.

Definitely not the passenger seatbelt - the noise is coming from the direction of the far right of the dash.

Well, I thought I may as well get some use out of the warranty so put the car into the local Mercedes dealer today.

Apparently the technician couldnt hear anything, and all suspension and braking components were checked and are fine. Which might mean he could hear it but its probably something loose in the depths of the dash thats an absolute ballache to find and sort.

So, do I put up with it, or push them to find it. Im not sure actually, Ive got rid of cars in the past because they've made constant irritating rattles or squeaks!

Know exactly how you feel. There's nowt worse than an unidentified rattle/squeak. And once you home in on it it really can spoil the enjoyment of a car.

You already know the answer if you're like me as there's no way you can ignore it. Find out when/ what type of surface it's prevalent and take the technician out in the passenger seat till he hears it. It's what I had to do on an annoying squeak I had from my front suspension but only when car was cold and only on certain speed humps.

They'd already replaced certain parts in the hope of solving it as they couldn't replicate the noise. it wasn't till I took the technician out in the car that he heard it for the first time and knew exactly what it was. Roll bar mounts.
