I'm looking for some advice on what Merc to get and my friendship group are split (and I'm confused) about the best choice.

I love the idea of getting an S500 Coupe as it's got a lovely V8 engine, the obvious S Class refinement and when new it was over £100,000, so someone has taken the hit for me to enjoy the car at half the price. Conversely, all the tech (and now more) has found its way into the newer E Class vehicles and I liked the idea of the E53 (which offers a great level of refinement, good performance with the straight 6 engine with hybrid boost and much better technology including CarPlay and Android Auto, etc). That is also around £50,000.

Has anyone driven both / either of these cars and have any thoughts? I just drove the S500 (and have previously driven the E53) and I felt that they were quite evenly matched. However, I'm not sure I would love the E53 as much as the S500 and wonder would I end up keeping the S500 for 20 years or so, or would it just become a headache very quickly!?

EDIT: I accidentally put E400 in the title instead of E53. To be clear, it's the E53 I'm interested in. Sorry.

Just get the S500. You know you will regret it if you dont.

The S500s are lovely cars, however, they are quite large for a 2-door and only you can decide whether one would be too big for the intended use. First-world problem?

I'm honestly not a troll, but in a massive change of suit I bought an M4 instead! Might regret it, but it was a great deal and an epic car (inho of course).

M4... nothing like a S or an E. It feels so basic inside.

Exactly, I went 100% back on what I was originally looking for! Story of my life.

I have had several S Class coupes and have never regretted any of my purchases. My current car is a 2012 63. In my opinion one of the best and rarest cars on the road today which includes the Bentley which I turned down.

I love that model of 63 for sure. I think the current models have lost a lot of the charm of that era. The C63 literally looks like a standard C Class, the E similarly although the S still looks special imho.

I'm also in the market for a coupe. I'm looking at M6's, Audi RS6 and the S63.

I currently a 2nd hand S63 is £65k. It will lose so much money over the next 3 years, I suspect £30k which is a heck of a lot of cash.

No idea what route to take. All great cars.

The S500 is a nightmare depreciation....

Three sold last week on 17 plates for between 42 and 44k at BCA.

A lot of car for the money but what a wallet buster!

The M4 won it in the end, but simply on price and how much fun it was to drive. The S500 was a lovely car but I'm not quite old enough yet that I need that luxury.

Looking forward to getting one of these in about three years time once they're in the low £20k range

Well the £20k cars never appeared!

Any views on them now they have aged a little bit.

Still look lovely to me and thinking about one.

I have driven a G82 M4 and they aren't that basic. Depends what you're after. If you want something to drive they are obviously a million times better than any E or S class, but if you want to mooch about, then not.....
