Hi I am currently eyeing up a car and i'm split between the 2 diesel models above.

I've never had a merc and the number of different models in one range is bewildering!

I'm looking for auto so will assume both are 7 speed.

Has anyone been through a similar process to determine preference? Where did you land?

I can see that the 250 face lift is approx £2-3000 more esp the AMG model.

I was edging towards an A5 2.0TDI but more landed on the Merc

Any advice hugely appreciated.

thanks

They are both the same 2.1L twin-turbo diesel engine in a different state of tune. They'll both have the same 7 speed auto at that age, should've had the transmission fluid changed at around 40k-ish miles (there's other threads running on this, and I always read conflicting advice about the exact age/mileage).

I've had several of the 220 CDI engines in C and E Classes and I don't think I'd pay an extra £3000 for the 250 if that's the price differential. However, I wouldn't have either in a convertible - the engine is bearable in an E Class and CLS, but I thought it was too intrusive in the C Class as it's not the nicest sounding.

Agree on the above noise issues, test drive and see.
the E350 diesel is the Derv to go for, V6, much smoother and more refined, loads of torque. Quiet. Can be remapped to substantial numbers and less MPG.

Remember in years to come Derv will be either taxed or viewed as bad for the environment, seriously effecting used values.
For any offset of loss in fuel costs you maybe better off long term considering the E200 petrol.
Certainly more in keeping with a convertible to have a quiet smooth petrol.

Used diesel prices are very stable currently though. I think new diesels are taking a hit.
However which petrol is a useful donkey? Don't want anything that will drink tho. 3.5 seems to be 20mpg less than diesel so real world worse I guess. Plenty of diesels though not too concerned about noise.

thanks (both)

I think you've mis-read my reply, there is a 350 Diesel and a 350 petrol, the 350 diesel gives mid to high 40's MPG and is a very quiet and smooth unit.
Both are 3.5 Litre V6s.

Apparently the 2.1 Derv units are pretty clattery and unpleasent (common review critique for this E class convertible, i've read alot of reviews as considering an Eclass convertible at the moment but the facelift 2014 onwards),
Diesel noise from the 2.1 worse with the roof off when you can hear it more.

in summary, if you have to go diesel, get the 350. there's not much MPG in it between the 2.1 and 350, also it's a heavy car so the 2.1 will have to be worked harder and be thirstier. a mapped E350d would make a decent car.

Yes thanks I'd realised when I looked again last night smile

I’ve tried a 2016 E220d Coupe and it felt a little noisy and sluggish. The 2.0 TDI in the Audi A5 is a much nicer engine, feels a lot smoother and more responsive.

If you’re set on the Merc I’d suggest the bigger engines are worth trying!

I would've had the Audi but I ended up pre-ordering a BMW Z4 M40i. Decided life is too short to worry about fuel costs laugh
