I currently own a 2016 S212 running 245/40/18 and 265/35/18 tyres.

We are going to be driving to the alps a couple of times each winter so I would like to get a spare set of rims and tyres that I can swap on and off the car. My question is what rim/tyre size can I go down to without effecting economy etc? I assume a larger profile winter tyre than "standard" would be desirable.

Thanks!

Should say in your handbook? I have a 2010 E500 with those same sizes for summer wheels / tyres and use 17 inch alloys with 245/45 tyres for winter and they are fine, in fact I prefer the ride to the larger wheels

MB's guidance comes in two parts:

Part 1: https://www.mercedes-benz.de/passengercars/being-a...

And part 2: https://www.mercedes-benz.de/passengercars/being-a...

There are numerous variations, but unless you have something bigger than a 350, it looks like you'll be fine on 225/55 R 16 tyres on 8J x 16 rims. You will be amazed how much lighter 16" rims are than your current set; and how much better the car rides and handles, even on winter compound and tread tyres.

In the past I have bought wheel (both alloy and steel) and winter tyre combos from mytyres.co.uk and have been very pleased with the price and service.

My brain hurts!!

I am still looking for winter wheels/tyres for my 2016 S212 (running standard 18 inch alloys)

Will a set of 7.5j x 16 ET 42 from a W211 fit and be safe to use??

I think the correct offset should be 45.5...will this be a problem? I assume I will need 14mm bolts.

Cheers!

Will they fit over the brakes?
Some of the 212 have quite large sport brakes and I know that 17 will fit them but doubt 16s will.

The offset difference is fine, especially given the narrower winter wheels.

You may find this table useful, it shows what size and offset wheels are fitted to each MB model:

I bought winter wheels and tyres for my S213 from these guys:

https://www.kunzmann.de/shop/en/tires-wheels-light...

If you send them your VIN they will give the various options if you are looking for a new set.

I've also got a 2010 E500 and mine came on 245/45 17 winters. Noticeably better ride quality over the 18's I replaced them with.

These are the 17's mine came on (with part numbers and offset). Standard Avantgarde rims I think.

€1,500 eekeek

I can't get 16's on so will just have to keep hunting for 17's with the right offset(ish) and hope for the best!

Yeah but I stuck my rims & winters on eBay and sold them to a member of MBclub for £400. Decent tyres, too, with 5.5 - 6.5mm. Just no use to me in London.

Or you could get a set of s/h 17's, have them refurbed and stick some new winters on. Loads of people sell those 17's so they can stick on 18's or 19's.

Yep, they are exactly what I'm after. Thanks for the help with this.
