My wife is about to take delivery of an SLC 180 (18 plate) which has nav preparation but is not enabled. Is it simply a case of buying a memory card and inserting it in the slot in the dash, or is there more to it?
If so, what needs to done to get the nav working?
Thanks in anticipation.

Evening, Yes you will need to buy a memory card and slot it in, Costs around £400 + Vat. Once you slot it in it will give you two options, to assign it to the vehicle or not, it will work unassigned, But once assigned to the vehicle it will only work in that car. You couldn't transfer the card to another Mercedes.

Thanks Rick that’s great news. Having checked EBay there seems to be several cards for sale staring at as little as £35. Assume I need to ensure that they are compatible with the SLC sat nav but on the basis of your answer it must be worth giving it a go. What do you think?

Okay, I have bought a new satnav card off eBay and understand that I have to download data from the M-B shop. Has anyone done this, how does it work? Thanks G

How did you sort it, Gazza?
I'm currently on what I suspect is going to be my last lease (I think the days of the bargains are going to be gone) so next car will probably be another Merc of about your age.

Could not be easier.Make sure you buy a new card, pre-used cards will not work apparently as they are paired with the first car they are used in. Bought mine from oneshopnavi off eBay for £45. Cheaper ones are available but this one was guaranteed new and unused. Card arrived as promised and I popped it into the slot in the dash, followed the instructions that came up on the screen and “Bobs you proverbial”! Could not be easier. When trying to close the deal on the car I asked the dealer if he would throw in a nav card but he said he could’t as it was worth about £500 so he adjusted the interest rate and gave me a full tank of fuel, touch up paint etc which combined saved me considerably more. I took a punt on the card expecting it not to work but it works fine. just for clarity, I have no other connection with oneshopnavi. Hope this helps. Cheers G

That is great!
I presume that would work with any of the SD card based nav systems in a Merc - my previous E class had Comand, but the new one has the card based system.

Those cards are almost certainly pirated. You might not want to talk about them in an open forum. whistle

Who knows - I had the previous gen R172 SLK250CDi (actually had two of them) and Merc wanted £500 for the satnav module (Becker Map Pilot). Got mine online from Germany for £180 if memory serves. That wasn't just an SD card, but a piece of hardware.

Merc have an enormous mark-up on these things.

Yep! Can't argue with that.
