Hi all

On Wednesday i collect my first Merc and move to what i think will be a significant leap from a 64 plate Golf 2.0TDI GT.

I think I've done my research so I have a reasonable understanding of the features, but I often find things out about a car months after I have been driving it, and would prefer not to miss a great feature from the outset.

For example, the foot operated boot opening is something I would be unlikely to know about unless the sales guy had told me when i checked out a different car of similar spec.

So my ask of you knowledgeable guys is:

1) Have I chosen well? Will i be pleased with my new car?
2) Are there any features that this car is missing with the add on packs?
3) What are your favourite features that are no so obvious?
4) Whats the best way to learn a new car?!

Thanks for any feedback/advice.

The W205 is a decent mile muncher and is a nice place to be.

The 250d engine is pretty rough when cold and at low speed, but goes well enough and is good on fuel.

I don’t like the Airmatic suspension on my C350e. In comfort mode there is far too much vertical travel in the suspension above 50mph, but in Sport mode it fidgets over minor imperfections. The ride on the W205 is fine on tin springs anyway.

Premium pack Is worth having, but you miss the Premium Plus improved stereo and Comand sat nav. The standard Garmin system is crap by modern standards - calculating routes is painfully slow. Make sure it’s running the latest software with the black graphics, if it looks like a Fisher Price toy it needs upgrading. The driving assistance pack is the best option but it’s pretty rare.

Your car will have Parktronic automated parallel and bay parking, but it’s of questionable use. There are YouTube videos on how to use it.

My favorite feature is the Hold function. Stop the car, then jab the brake pedal and Hold will appear at the bottom of the display. The car will not move, but you can move off using the accelerator. Don’t worry about the handbrake - it sorts itself out when you select park. I’ve never touched the handbrake switch.

Be careful if you’re used to using a button on the RH stalk to operate the windscreen washer - this is the Park button on the drive selector on the Merc and everything is operated from a single stalk on the left. If you press it at very low speed it will activate Park and bring the car to a very sudden halt!

Another good feature is if you are leaving the car on a cold day, tap the big switch the middle of the climate buttons marked Rest and it will run the fan and blow the residual warmth from the engine into the car. Seems to be good for about 20 minutes.

The washers seem prone to freezing up. There are no heated washer jets on mine, which was a big surprise. I’ve resorted to using neat Prestone screenwash rated to -36.

There is an app which allows you to view the owners manuals on an iPad or Android tablet - they are quite comprehensive and explain all of the features.
