E400 Convertible V6 engine question
Discussion
Is any one aware of the Cam chains being a problem? That's the simple question i have, the back ground is slightly more complicated, i recently purchased the car, after just a couple of days it developed a horrible knocking sound on start up, hot or cold, my initial fear was oil starvation or lack of it, the garage assured me they had changed the oil and filter when i picked it up, i dipped the oil and found it very strange that oil with 100 miles clocked would be jet black, so back to the garage i go.......hand over the keys complaining about said noise and the oil, off goes the service manager 5 minutes later he is back from behind the garage assuring me car is fine and that modern oils are very thin and you are bound to get engine noise on start up and the colour is to be expected, i stood there gob smacked, felt that i had basically had a pat on the head and been politely mugged off!! I decided to do my own oil change for peace of mind with Millers fully synthetic (my personal preference) correct spec oil for the engine etc, the oil i drained was about 1.5 litres down on the recommended amount and it was jet black, would oil disintegrate that quickly? any way i started the car again and it seemed ok but soon developed the same noise on start up, sorry should have said, hence oil change, the orange engine management light came on prior to my oil change, ring the garage to be told that's ok as long as its not a red light! bring the car in, not on your life was my answer i am taking it to Mercedes for a correct diagnostic, the upshot of which was knock sensors poss cam chain, so back to the garage i go, asking for my money back as i have only had the car 2 weeks, the garage asked for a chance to inspect the car which had to be picked up on a low loader on the recommendation of Mercedes 'do not drive it was there advice' after a bit of backwards and forwards i have agreed i am willing to continue on with the car as long as the garage pay to have it repaired by Mercedes which they have said they will do, my logic is if Merc repair it i will get a bit of warranty from them which will be more useful than the tin pot 'covers nothing' policy/warranty the car sales guys gave me which inevitably doesn't cover anything. Following a chance encounter with an AA guy today and just chatting about cars i explained my plight to which he said its a known fault cam chains on the V6, i am wondering if Mercedes will cover this as goodwill (car has only covered 36,000 miles 64 plate) which is basically what the owner of the garage is trying to push for, i am not naming and shaming the garage for the fear of queering my own situation should i go for a full refund. can anyone offer any assistance or suggestions???
Was it one owner?
A very coincidental post here - same age and mileage and the owner traded it in after diagnosis!

Rix are you a member of this forum? can you get a message to the guy? i cant believe mercedes having taken the car in pex can just kick it back out presumably at auction and i end up innocently buying from a dealer.
