W212 E220 engine removal - with or without gearbox?
Discussion
Asking for a friend who's in a spot of trouble.
He's removing an E220 engine, he's got a replacement engine on a crate. What's the process for this age of Merc - remove the engine and gearbox separately or remove the front end and take the whole lot out in one go?
Keen to find this out!

Technically I guess you could do either. But imagine it's like twice as much work to pull the box out with the engine through the front so I would remove the gearbox before pulling the engine out. I've done many over the years and this is how I've done it.
As the box is connected to the prop and mounts to the body, not forgetting the oil lines coming from the front cooler, by the time all that's been disconnected all that you need to do is loosen off the torque converter and bell housing bolts to drop it off. It'll be alot easier to do this in situ than try and do it when it's swinging around from an engine hoist, unbalanced.
Engine can come straight out the top then.
