Hello all,

I have just bought an approved used C250 from a main dealer. After getting it home I've noticed that the front pads only have about 3-3.5mm tread on them. I get that it's used so I have to accept fair wear and tear but surely these will need doing within 3-6 months. Shouldn't this have been picked up on the pre-sale check and if so, do you think I have a claim for a new set of front pads?

Cheers.

I'm afraid in my experience and that of others that "Approved Used" is absolutely meaningless . You would expect it to mean some assurance of quality but it just doesn't seem to be the case. In practice there seems to be very little checking of vehicles going on before they are punted out to an MB buyer. Sad. You could try going back to the dealership and express some disappointment at the state of the brakes but don't hold your breath. Hindsight's a wonderful thing but the time to check this stuff is before you buy.

As the above poster said used approved means nothing - all it means is that you have come back all be it with some struggle.
Had the same issue with another manufacturer: "USED APPROVED" with all the crap about how many checks they do - mentioned the newest MOT showed pads v low, and 10 other things I just did not expect of a 3 year old car with 20k on the clock.

Sent them a firm email of complaint - got no positive reply within 7 days so called the manufacturer central customer service number and they asked me to CC in the regional CS director and another person.

Next call I get was to take it to the local main dealer. They were top notch and said yup we will get every single thing done for you.

I think most main dealers have this apprach to just try and wing selling a car and if someone complains then just fix it and if they don't then quids in.

I would contact the dealer and say you don't expect to do work on a used approved car within 3 months of buying it.

Most dealers will have a fixed limit of brake wear before they will change them as part of the approved used checks.

In my experience, if the pads / discs are more than 70% worn, they will be changed, if they are not, they will not. There are similar limits for tyres, but each dealer has their own threshold. Buying approved used certainly doesn't mean the car will have fresh brakes, tyres, service etc, these things are usually done only if due fairly soon.

Cheers all, you have confirmed my thinking. I’ve sent a polite email expressing my concerns so will await an answer. If it isn’t what I think I deserve I’ll contact Mercedes direct.
