I drove to a friends Sat day time, car was fine. On the way back the car picked up a problem. When pulling away, you can put your foot on the accelerator pedal but nothing happens, no movement or revs, after a few seconds it seems to remember to pull away and then goes like normal. Any ideas?

I had an issue like this on a W211 V6 diesel.

I cant remember exactly what it was but there was an o ring which was leaking oil between the cylinders causing a bank of butterfly valves to stick. It was intermittent but needed fixing as it left the car with no power as you said.

The o ring was about £1 but it is in a very inaccessible part of the engine and cost several hundred pounds to get to it (through an independent).

No DPF on the W210 that I am aware of

Any smell of diesel around the top of the engine , had a fuel hose fail on mine which caused similar issues

If it's a diesel, it could be a bad turbo if petrol, blocked cat. The blocked cat may not throw a code.
