Looking to spend £14-£15k. Never mind fuel and tyres, what goes wrong on them? Not for me (unfortunately) but for my in laws. Cheers.

Wasn’t there an issue with the early 63’s power units having some issue with head bolts?

I owned the one used on Top Gear for a year. It was the cheapest around by a long shot but it did 10k without a hint of trouble. Sold it to a good friend of mine and it’s done another 30k (up to to c.150k now) and he’s had to replace a rear shock absorber. It had been serviced properly but most of the suspension is still original.

Just buy one, I loved mine, I just got a little bored as West Wales doesn’t have roads big enough to stretch it’s legs - I replaced it with a Bedford CF biggrin

The M156 had issues with head bolt design, they started to rot away basically, though not all of them for some reason. It seems to vary though not on any specific factor, like how it's been driven or where it's been kept, such as extreme climates. Engine numbers ending 60658 and onwards had modified head bolts fitted, though a few after this number have still had problems. The W211 E63 would certainly fall into the early number category.

If the car drives OK, try to ascertain if it's had any preventative maintenance done to the top end. If it runs OK though, and shows no obvious signs of water ingress, don't worry too much about it. I know of a lot more of these engines which are running without incident than ones that have been damaged.

Do you have any vids of it from Top Gear?

Lovely car - I bet you had air cooled front seats?

I wonder in absolute terms was the E55K the better engine over the 6.3v8? (6.2v8 actually but Merc bizarrely name it 6.3 for some reason in every model?)
I saw one last summer E55K near stone henge A303 stick along side me in traffic - what a cool car old chap driving it but even slow driving it sounded perfect.
I’ve never once heard the V8 E63 6.2 (clearly have the C63) so I’ve no idea on its rumbleness the 5.5 V8 bi turbo does sound lovely though but it’s nearly twice the price

Its a tribute to the original 300SEL 6.3 engine which came out in 1968

But why did they cast it 6.2? WTF why not make it 6.3 to give the respect the legacy deserves

Apart from the reliability you need to consider general maintenance as well - I'm sure you have as you mention fuel and tyres, they're certainly ruinous enough! My rears were £270 each and I thought that was pretty cheap. Discs and pads all around came to £2200. Pump for the seat ventilation was £800. 2 Oxygen sensors I think came to about £700 (under warranty), clutch in the 7G-tronic was £1500.
I've only had it 11 months! Different car though (12 plate CLS63).

//edit to add: Do it anyway though. YOLO etc., it's only money. You'll smile every time you drive it.

They are batst mental cars. Mine is a 2010 with 78K on the clock. Fantastic condition. Was offered £15k trade for it last year but I thought..''Seriously? What else am I going to get for that kind of money?'' I do have to go into full denial mode when it comes to running costs however.

Jewel of a thing. Do it!

Had ours for 8 years now. Just too good a car to change. It's had an alternator, some front discs, two rear air springs and a compressor for the suspension in all that time

I bought my one owner 2007 car in 2010. Done 160k km (100k miles) since. No major problem. Just regular maintenance (not cheap of course) and some small things. Totally love it. So do the kids (and their friends) and the dog (no friends allowed in the car). Plan to keep using it as the family car for years to come.

Good point. Its 6208cc or something isn't it, maybe the extra 92 cc made the build disproportionately expensive?! Just guesses tbh.

I think to myself what else could I have bought for the money(24k) and tbh not much comes close. The next car I'd have liked is another 10k (gtr).. I'll be keeping mine as long as possible. Tires all around tomorrow 750 (mich ps4) and service next week 1200. It'll do 29 mpg on a run to London from Bath. It'll do 22 with mixed driving. It even looks mean. What's not too like?!
