Which Transmission fluid for my 722.503 'boxed S124 E320?
Discussion
The internet can be a dangerous place. Or maybe a little knowledge is dangerous. Maybe I'm worrying too much about the transmission, but it's not like the 722.503 5 speed has the best of reputations either.
I thought getting the spark plugs was hard. 3 sources had three different answers. In short.
Mercedes said to use either Bosch F8-DC4, Champion C10YCC or BERU 14F-8DU0
Bosch say to use the resistored FR8-DC+
NGK say to use BCP6E, despite the MB plugs suggesting a BCP5E is the correct plug on a crossover.
The motor factors naturally, list the last two options (Bosch & NGK) as potential choices.
It seems there is more.
I've just acquired an S124 E320 which hasn't run for a couple of years. One of the plans is to change all of the fluids, with of course the transmission being one of them.
Mine is a 5 speed auto and I've noticed there is alot of talk of what fluid is correct. Go onto the Pelican Parts site, and it suggests only using MB fluid, as do a few others. Others reckon the newer fluid MB sell isn't backwards compatible with the specs of the day, which I believe was MB236.6. I think the 'oldest' fluid MB now sell is to the specifcation of MB 236.14, which apparently is backwards compatible to 236.10.
My question is, which fluid do I use?

I used fluid complying with 236.1 (Fuchs Titan 3000) in my 95 E320 - I think any Dexron III fluid would probably ok, but used something with MB approval. The next generation of five speed boxes (722.6, which had a very long service life) are now recommended to use 236.14, which I think first appeared with the 7 speed boxes; these later 5 speed boxes did not appear in 124s.
(On plugs, the general recommendation seems to be non-resistor plugs).
