Looking to buy an early W209 model CLK Cabriolet, but unsure what engine / gearbox to go for. The car must be registered before March 2006, not too worried about performance or fuel consumption as I am likely only to do 3000 miles a year, although hope it will be reasonable on a long journey if driven respectfully, as I want to do the North 500 route next year, and live 600 miles from the start point in Inverness. Budget up to £5k, but would go a little higher for a really good car. I had narrowed the search to a 320 and discounted the 350's as I hear there are expensive engine problems on the early cars. Have seen a nice 2004 500 model, anything to look out for on this model. Also would the basic 200 be a possibility, as performance is not an issue for me. Any advise gratefully received. Many thanks

Morning Pete, good to see you back.

I've had a W209 2009 plate CLK350 convertible for about 2 years, great car. Apart from really wanting a CL500 or CL63 I'd see myself holding onto it for a while.

Got that solid Merc build quality you'd expect, much better than the CLS350 (63 plate) I had previously.

that said I've had a few niggly wear and tear bits - roof relay (350), Thermostat (280) and the handbrake cable problem - it is held on with chocolate clips and they fail and let the cable hit the propshaft, identifying itself by a rubbing sound that sounds like it is coming from behind the vents.

I'd say all would be suitable if you arent worried about performance, although the v6 lumps offer a smoother drive. Had the 230 Kompressor in an SLK the wife had, didnt like the sound or the delivery that much.

Any other questions let me know like.

Oh to go back to Minehead 2006!
