E63 AMG brake & clutch life
Discussion
Chaps, I am looking at the midsize E-class 5.5 turbo E63, and its derivatives, as a family car.
How long do the brake discs tend to last on these? I know it is a question of how they have been driven, but I'd like some experience from those of you that own the W212 E-class. I am looking at a couple at around the 50,000 mile mark and whilst they have had pads, there is no mention of discs. Am I about to buy something that will imminently deliver a massive bill?
And the same question for the wet clutch on the 7 speed MCT gearbox, please...
I live in London, so the car will do much of its driving in traffic, but only about 2000 miles a year.

Harry, we've never met but seem to have similar discussions around cars and houses.
I've also reached the conclusion that the M3 needs to go and something with 4 doors needs to replace it.
Having done the M5 wagon, I wish I'd gone the AMG first time round.
Be interested to hear your responses.

Hi chaps - thanks. A 5 year old CLS63 AMG Shooting Brake is an imminent arrival.
The brakes look like they will need replacing in the next 10,000 miles - which is about 5 years' use for me, so pretty relaxed about it.
I'll report back on the car. On test drive, this machine was brilliant - so smooth and comfortable pottering in town, and an absolute animal in sport mode and when lit up.
I expect big running costs, but hoping for OK reliability...

Excellent choice. The brakes look like they will need replacing in the next 10,000 miles - which is about 5 years' use for me, so pretty relaxed about it.

FWIW Maundrells stuck new discs on mine (EDIT; 2010 5.5 E500) when I bought it on 54k. It was a marginal thing but they offered to supply the parts at cost and fit them for free so who was I to argue? I assume that they were the originals but will have a look at the service history to double check.
I'd imagine it will be pretty reliable. I've had 2 x C43's and 2 x E500's over the last 15 years and have had no major borkage. There is, of course, an AMG tax on things like discs but a lot of running gear is E class and designed to withstand a lot of abuse.
Anyway, lovely car. Probably my favourite derivative of that platform style-wise. And the 5.5T is the spiritual successor to the mighty 55K. Amazing engine.
