R129 Price Guide?
Discussion
Sorry if this had been asked before but couldn't find anything with the search.....
Is there a good guide to current R129 SL prices online anywhere? Primarily looking at 97-onwards, in particular special editions in both 320 and 500.
Are the 2000-onwards cars OK? Reading up online seems to suggest lower build quality?
Is there a preferred UK 'buyers guide' online?
Also anywhere I can find what came as standard and option on the various years?
Thanks in advance!

Have a read of the thread further down this Mercedes page, the 3/4k r129.... It's got some good information from owners.
As a 1999 SL500 owner, I think the biggest issue concerning quality relates to paint. I had to replace the wings and do a whole respray. An excellent car that now looks as good as it goes.

Prices vary wildly and can bear little relationship to the underlying merits of the car. Beware of thinking that these cars have much potential to rise in value - there were over 220k produced in 12 years and there are lots of cars knocking around for sale. Only SL60s and 600s are really that hard to find.
11k should buy you a very very good SL320 with less than 70k miles and in a strong colour combination, with excellent history, no faults and no jobs to do.

This car is being sold by someone in the MB Club who has done quite a bit of tidying and improvement to it recently.
The market is soft and buyers can definitely negotiate, though good cars will get snapped up nonetheless.
The various Special Editions don't add much to the value of the car, perhaps excepting the Silver Arrow run-out version. However that does add quite a lot of stick-on bling to the car and isn't to everyone's taste.
If you look up Turnbull and Oliver R129's buyers guide on YouTube you'll find them helpful. There's no substitute for getting out there and looking at several cars though.

I'm not sure I've come across a car with such a ridiculous range of asking prices.
Lots have money to spend, so if paying top dollar make sure it's good. Don't rely on a low mileage car 'probably being ok' might look good cosmetically, but pound to a penny it'll chew up plenty of cash once pressed into regular use. What you want to see is loads of lovely bills for ancillary stuff, suspension, flex disc, water pump, fluids, brakes, duo valve, fan clutch, hood, dip switch etc.
Not too complicated, but check, check and check again.

I dropped £11k on a 1998 SL320 back if January from a dealer.(Adrian Blyth)
MIles 83K, pano roof (They go for £2K on Ebay), AMG alloys, metallic blue with beige leather.
Great thick service history, much spent in last 5 years by the prevoius owner. It was simply the best car I looked at, extremly clean, bueatiful interior etc. Still I can point to a few jobs I need to take car off, but thats old cars for you.
Another dealer had a 1996 SL320, 55K on the clock up for £14K. It was a poorer example, needing some paint and the interior wasnt great. Had some basic history, but not as extensive. So dont confuss mileage and condition as has been said.
Look at as many as you can. Then you'll get a feel for what is good value.

The later Designo Almandine is a cherry-black colour, quite unlike the earlier red colour.
Indeed. The car is a special edition released in 2001 in Almandine Black (182) at the same time as the Silver Arrow and the Designo Alanite (green) ....https://www.mercedes-benz-media.co.uk/models/archi...
