C63 as daily driver and 20k miles per year?
Discussion
Hi all,
Man maths at its finest but my thinking is the running costs of a C63 would be offset by the lack of depreciation over 2 years vs something like a 2 year old Golf R.
I’ve just spoken to a good friend who has told me I’d be absolutely bonkers (he owns a 507 c63 and a new golf r).
Now with the sort of mileage I do petrol and general maintenance isn’t going to be penny’s on anything a little bit fruity, but will a 6.2 V8 just be horrific?
I’ve owned my Z4 for nearly 2 years. It’s a 28i so a 2.0 turbo with 271bhp (mapped). It averages around 26mpg which for a 2.0 turbo I think is shocking. It’s had 3 services in under 2 years, 2 sets of Tyres (safe size as the 63) and discs and pads all round. So it’s not cheap cheap to run plus I’ll of lost about £8-9k in those 2 years from depreciation. Plus I’ve spent fortunes modifying it to make it a bit more special (which I wouldn’t have to do to a c63).
I can buy a 2013 C63 on 32k Miles for £26k. So in 2 years time I’d take it to 72k Miles (bought the Z4 on 34k Miles Md it’s now on 74k) and I can’t see them dropping below £20k in 2 years.
So would this be financially ruinous or does this sound semi logical to the ph masses??
I’m keen to hear from anyone who does a fair few miles in their C63!

I had a w204 2011 that I did an 80 mile daily round trip in.
It’s ruinous.
Go look at the price of tyres, pads, discs, the amount of oil etc.
Then get used to the idea that anything other than cruise locked 65mph will screw your mpg. Only car I’ve had where you can actually see the fuel gauge move.
Do it. It’s fking epic. The noise is just addictive. Dooooooooooo it.

It is ludicrous, an extremely stupid car for that sort of usage, Completely impractical, financially ruinous, one of the few cars where a tank of fuel outlives the rear tyres (almost). It’s ruinous.

But, it is quite brisk.
On balance, Do it. It’s fking epic. The noise is just addictive. Dooooooooooo it.

I just don’t see the logic in this. I get so much pleasure from my car on the commute that if I didn’t have it I’d hate the commute.
I’m with you on this. All my commute cars have has some PH’esq appeal. Life is too short to spend that amount of time in a carctou don’t like. Get it done. Don’t like it, get rid and try something else.

Just do it! It’s so naughty it’s nice. It brings pleasure at even very modest speeds and is something you can look back on as being so absurd it’s fantastic. Have you bought it yet?
At OP annual miles is it smarter to but the hot v twin turbo instead a newer version and more naughty. Not as nice as the dirty v8 noise the 6.2v8
Yes, it’s worth doing and, yes, they’re silly expensive to run. I forgot about the costs after a couple of weeks, but I still noticed spending extraordinarily large amounts of time in petrol stations!
It’s an amazing car for both long, relaxing journeys and spirited drives. I ended up keeping mine for four years before changing to the the new model.

As a bit of contrast I too daily'd a fairly expensive car at 20k a year. I went from a Elise which did good mpg and reasonable servicing to a Z4M which did ok mpg but blinken expensive parts and servicing.
I ended up resenting the M for how bloody expensive my daily commute had become. Yes on the few twistys I could have fun, yes I could lord it over people when stuck in 55mph that I had a fast car, finally yes I had a nice car sat in the works car park. But it just was pissing money down the drain. I finally got rid (which I regret) for a sensible car so if I could have my time again I'd have a two car set up. Unfortunately the wife won't contemplate 3 cars so I'm with the commuter (BMW I3) and she has the fun car (Abarth Comp).
It really depends on personal financial position. In no world does it make real sense but if you have the money go for it!

A 70+k mile C63 in 2years will be worth less than £20k I reckon, who would want that engine and gearbox after that use. Granted, a strong engine, but that’s a lot of use.
The C63 would be so expensive to run. Fuel, maybe 17-23mpg for average to short journeys (my 4.0 C63 is no different). The 6.2 car eats tyres in its standard tracking setup. Sometimes 5k on the fronts before you get this rumbling noise. Maintenance and spares won’t be cheap.
I’d get something more modern and smaller engine for the mileage you do. Weekend car or low mileage the C63 would be fine.
Sorry to be negative

I get 13 mpg in heavy traffic and I am tinker bell on the throttle. 23 mpg at 74 mph on e motorway with cruise on. A daft car for commuting as at low speeds the gearbox is not ideal. Fuel tank is only 66 L so you will go through £150 q week on fuel and watch the oil too over 1200 miles.
Buy a slush box auto or hybrid for commuting and the C63 for driving days and tunnels.
