W211 E500 - correct oil level?

I'm going to change the oil on my E500 this afternoon for the first time (I had an indy do it last few times).
I went into the "hidden" service menu and the current oil level is 5.4 litres. The car has not requested a top-up since last service, so I'm assuming that 5.4 litres is about right.
I appreciate that this 5.4 litres is not the same amount that will come out of the sump drain (should be 7-8 litres) but I want to know what that level should be reading before I fire up the engine.
What is the correct figure for this reading, to be equivalent to "MAX" on a traditional dipstick?
