...my father is planning to buy one of these in the next week or so - seems to be quite a few new ones floating around the dealer network.

List price is £56k (including options of £5k). What sort of a discount should he be requesting? £7k?

Also, does anyone have experience of this model - pros & cons would be appreciated.

Make sure you keep mentioning to the salesma that the new model isn't a million miles away, that should be a good enough reason to justify a discount.

If he insists on buying new, and is speccing it up, Linguatronic is a great thing to have and really sells the car when you come to shift it on in the future.

Make sure your dad insists on a 'TMC' Sat Nav DVD with the car, again it's a great feature, but I don't think they've rolled out all the old discs yet, and it'll cost around £350 to upgrade.

...aha! ...someone 'in the know'! Thanks for the advice. He wants a new car, but not to spec up himself. He wants a good deal on one of the many brand new (delivery miles) cars either sitting around in the UK or in transit. What's a good discount off list on one of these? He specifically wants an S320cdi in cubanite silver, good spec.

£7-8k seems reasonable on a car with a tiny mileage. I'd be tempted to go with Obsidian Black to be fair.

After my wife’s bump I was given an S320CDI as a courtesy car for a week.

If I were you I'd make sure your dad puts you on he insurance, these cars are pretty good. I was astonished at the combination of performance and economy, got 35mpg over mixed driving into Manchester (non rush hour), even having a bit of hoon round the lanes I still got 27mpg . The car pulls well in gear, it is quite quiet once warmed up, quiet when pottling around and when cruising. The only slight negative aspects of the engine were, a little start up noise, the noise under acceleration and a little vibration at standstill, particularly through the brake pedal and wheel (mind you this is comparing it to an S430 and S55, it's still very good).

I timed the cars acceleration and got it to do a very impressive 0-60 7.8 secs and 0-100 in just under 19 secs, the car has 10k miles on. See vid.

S320CDI 0-100 bit out of focus

Car was fitted with 18" AMG alloys, which gave the steering nice weight, they produced good grip and helped the cars handling, they did however allow minor road imperfections to be felt and caused a little thumping over big bumps, the ride was still one of the best, but the S430 I had on 16" wheels just floated along , although it's grip was noticeably less and the car understeered far more. Although really nice looking The AMG wheels also were prone to terrible scuffing with no raised rim to protect them, all four were badly scored when the car arrived, might be best to avoid this type of wheel.

Resale is good on these car but as said above new model sometime in 2006, the diesel should fare better than the other models though. You could honeround other dealers and see if you can get a bidding war going, quite a few nice S320CDI's about. Check the mercede website used car section and a lot of the dealersuse auto trader (autotrader is handy to check pricve as well) Nice cars.

...thanks for the comprehensive and very useful response. My Dad's tracked a brand new S320cdi down, average spec, but brand new - £46,500. About £9k off list! He'll be taking delivery in a few weeks and I'm definitely on the insurance (although it's a bit of an 'old man's car')!

My dad has one of these and he loves it. He's had it for five years and has said that when the time comes to change it he'll be buying another one (despite my suggestions that a new AMV8 might be worth a look)!!

I drive it occassionally, mainly on long trips where we share the driving. As a long distance crusier it's fantastic but as a Golf GTI owner I find it a little heavy around the coners but that is to be expected I suppose. Despite what a lot of people say about Mercs the build quality is fantastic, it has been 100% reliable for five years and the interior still looks great.

Had one on loan for a couple of weeks recently while the Masser was in for service. Have to say thoroughly impressed, fast, quiet (well too quiet really!), so comfortable and the best motorway mile muncher ever.

Not particularly happy on the backroads being driven hard, but kick back and enjoy the luxury and the ride and it's a real winner
