I've been looking at an E Class to replace my 530d. I've 3 kids and I've looked at an Allroad, Q5 and the new 5. The lease deals on an new E Class are in my price range though and I can get a new e220d amg line for about 350 a month on lease or a used e350 for the same on hp. Never had lease but like the idea of not having to sell a car on or trading in...
I haven't had a test drive in the new E but I have driven the e350.

I suppose it depends to some extent on your annual mileage, but if it's not excessively high I would go for the 350.
I have a 2011 220 CDi and the 350 is in a different league refinement and performance wise but sips more diesel especially on short town type journeys. I haven't driven the new 2 litre diesel but all reports say it's a step forward from the 2.1 litre both in terms of refinement and economy.
If I was in your shoes I would buy the 350 on hp, but would like that to be the petrol version, but they are a bit like hens teeth unfortunately. Failing that it would be the diesel 350.
I suppose your decision will be easier once you have driven the new 220 with the new car feel and smell
But I would still go for the 350

I'm been in my new E220d AMG Line estate since September 17. Have done about 9k in it so far.
My previous daily was a Saab 9-3 V6 with about 300hp / 400NM. The E220 feels plenty fast enough for daily driving and is no slouch. It is supremely quiet and I'm getting a genuine 50-55mpg on mixed driving.
I couldn't really afford the E350 but my plan is to lease my current E220 for 3 years and then buy a E350 that is three years old, at that stage. Remaps a go go....
When it comes to performance, I guess it depends on what you really want from you car. I also have an SLK 320 for V6 hooning so I'm not too bothered about the E220. The savings on the E220 over an E350 are going into the SLK 32/55 fund anyway! At the end of the day an E350 will still be a diesel.
I had a 24 hr test drive in a fully loaded E220 beforehand, which was useful. The demo had optional 20 inch wheels, which I thought I wanted. However, mine has the standard 19 inch wheels and rides much better. Before the test drive I was also convinced I wanted the pano roof. However, during the test drive I never used it. The Burmester audio upgrade would be a bonus.
Overall, I've been really pleased with E220 - very comfortable, very quiet, very stable, practically drives itself.

Super thanks for the feedback...Im going to take a test drive this week. The lease deals are good on the new E and that's what tempted me. I had been looking at 2015/6 E350 and then checked leasing deals and was surprised they were in my ball park. The new model is a lovely point motor.

PS the new E220 is not clattery an idle, unlike the previous generation of engines. And that is me saying that coming from two V6 petrols!
You see - I think they are. I drove the new shape one and was a passanger in one.For a 4 clyinder diesel it's brilliant, but it remains what it is and it's a little clattery and harsh. Goes well but my money would be on the 3.0
Took a test drive last week, mixed run mostly b roads but a stretch on the motorway. Car is very refined and to be honest the interior was stunning. The car pulls very well in certain rev ranges and is fairly quick. I could still obviously detect it was a 4 cylinder but then again the trip computer was showing 52 mpg. My car does 32 mpg.
I wouldn't even test drive the 350d as it would turn my head. All in all very very impressed with it. Just waiting to get my own car sold and then it's decision time.

Picking up our new 220d saloon tomorrow, went for the 4matic version (waits for all the sucking of teeth due to the issues of skipping / hopping they have had) as the other half wanted something that might be able to go somewhere when the weather gets bad.
Look at various other cars, Lexus / BMW / Audi, couldn't really find anything else to replace our current E class, the interior is a very nice place to be, the bigger engine is nice but having run one of those for a while I think (with the way things are going with diesels) and the mileages being covered I'd rather have the 220 for now and replace my 250 E coupe with a bigger petrol engine version when the time comes.
