W124 Advice, on a laid up 300D
Discussion
Long story short a colleague recently let me in on a car he’s had in a garage for the past 15 years, it hasn’t been used since his late father passed away and he now wants rid of it.
I went for a quick look the other day, it appears fresh enough on the surface, and under the bonnet it just looks “right”
It’s a 1988/89 car, with beige leather, no aircon, and appears to be a basic car other than the leather, which is in good condition.
Two owner car, I believe his father had it for some 10+ years, not that it matters much but full history up until it was parked up, and it’s done 104k
I’ve always been after a W124, shame it’s not an estate, but he’s asking £750 for it, I’m not sure if the price is right or I am potentially opening myself up to a world of pain with it. Any advice from W124 experts would be hugely appreciated

Ok I’m going for it, I’m going to try shifting it at the weekend, my colleague reckons a fresh battery and it will start, I’d be amazed if it does but fingers crossed
It has some 5 spoke period wheels on it, apparently it came with these when his father purchased it, I’m not a fan, I’d like to return it to period original, would a 1989 car be too old for 8 holes?
There’s a new Mercedes specialist opening up here next week, the chap is a Mercedes enthusiast so I feel it might be worthwhile sending it in his direction once I have it home

£750 is a snip.
It'll probably start and run on a fresh battery but you're going to want to do some basic recommissioning. Let us know what happens. 1989 cars never had eight holes; steels and trims were standard on a 300 D; 15 hole forged alloys were optional.
I was hoping you would see this, and give an opinion, it’s your 124 that has really got me into these It'll probably start and run on a fresh battery but you're going to want to do some basic recommissioning. Unfortunately due to weather and logistics collection won’t be today but I intend to sort it this week all going well
I think I’ll look out for some 15 holes once I get it home. I’ve already spoken with the owner of the specialist up here about recommissioning the car and he is VERY keen.
To put this car into perspective the site Autoscout lists just 34 W124 300D models across Europe, top price currently is €11,000. Pity it's not a W123 you could double that price, at £750 it will be worth that in parts alone. Getting it road worthy and you'll easily double your money , we need pics!

Did it come with the plate too? If so, you've really landed on your feet.
Sadly the plate isn’t on the car anymore, it would have been a bonus if it was It’s slow off the mark, given it’s been sat in a garage for 15 years I darent have taken it further than the mile I had to drive it home
