Rather than high jack one of the R129 threads I will ask a simple question here.
Is there an age limit on R129 air bags. I own a 1997 SL 320 and nothing has ever been done to the bags. A "Johnny know all" on another forum says they should have been replaced long ago.Should I be worried.

I used to drive an early R129. Technically, I think MB wanted the airbags replaced at 15 years but the cost was prohibitive when I looked into it and they are not things I wanted to buy from a breaker.

I might be called irresponsible but I had the bag removed when the warning signal came up and I didn't replace it.

I took the view that I've spent most of my motoring life in cars without airbags and, yes, I was damaging my chances of surviving some collisions, but the pop up roll bar is on a different circuit, and the car is so over-engineered that I was happy to take the risk.

BTW, I did disclose the fact that I had had it removed when I sold the car.

Good post, I agree with everything you say,yes they are a very well engineered car.

A few years ago I had an unfortunate experience that tested my R129 safety features. A huge Iveco van rear ended me at traffic lights. The impact was so great the role bar popped up and the seat belt pre tensioners deployed. Thanks to the super seat I did not feel a thing. I could open and close the boot lid and drove the car home. The Iveco van was left in a pool of oil and water and had to be towed away. (And its driver still had arms and legs)
Naturally during the body repair,at a Mercedes restoration specialist, all the seat belts and various sensors or what ever were replaced.
I've not had any air bag lights come up so I intend to live with it all for now.
