Advice needed on 2003 C180 Kompressor

I need a little help, search function didn't bring anything up so thought I'd ask.
Bought a 52 plate C180 coupe which has a couple of strange faults.
Firstly, the wipers and washers stop working when stationary. Not stop wiping, literally just stop, not in their park position and washers won't work either. Bit of a nuisance when trying to clear the screen in the mornings!
Secondly, and more seriously, every now and then, the car loses drive almost like it's stuck between gears (auto box).
Any advice on either/both faults would be most appreciated.
