What a Merc dealer donated me
Discussion
Following a service at a large MB dealership
I drove 15 miles home, what could have happened if it got near the belts! Certainly the dealer would have denied all knowledge (as, by then it would have fallen into the road). Admittedly from where the tool is it'd be hard to get to the front but hopefully you get my drift.
So now every time I collect after work's done I pop the hood.

Personally, I would take it back. Probably snap on is it?
The tech will have paid for that with his own money, it won't have been bought by the garage.
I know I'd be very appreciative if I'd left something behind that cost me a few quid.
Why, not my problem and a 30-mile roundtri at my time and expense? However, I did take it back. No thanks just a "he was wondering where that went" comment. The tech will have paid for that with his own money, it won't have been bought by the garage.

Yep, looks like a swivel head 1/4 drive ratchet (possibly Snap-On)
Similar happened to me once, I paid £900 for some repairs to my previous Audi (Fg Audi electrics!) and found a nice pair of long nosed pliers in a similar position to you.
I have since engraved them ""£900 Audi pliers" and they live in my tool box and get used regularly.
Always makes me smile when I pick them up (and wince a little too!)

What a hugely pointless and negative post. I drove 15 miles home, what could have happened if it got near the belts! What if? What if? Nothing bad happened, nobody died? It's an easy mistake to make when you're working on cars day in day out, especially if it's a big job requiring a vast range of tools. Lost countless tools myself, it's frustrating as fk and not exactly done on purpose. More so if means your going to be shelling out £100+ replacing it.
Kudos for taking it back, would of expected a bit more appreciation but then I expect who you gave it to didn't lose it. And the chances of that tool doing anything more than dropping onto an undertray is slim to none, let alone jumping into a middle of a moving belt.
I found a well used Halfords Pro ratchet and socket in the road to our house. Stopped and picked it up, more because I wouldn't want anyone running over it than anything else.
I noticed the village garage owner walking past with his dog later and asked if it might be one of theirs - I had a brain-fart and said it was Snap-On and he failed to hide his disappointment when he looked at it and realised it was Halfords! He took it for their apprentice.
He said they do leave stuff in cars now and again and I was surprised that he said customers nearly always deny it.

Seriously?! That's your attitude to a professional job - it wasn't deliberate, it was a big job and I'm a bit blind mate AMG Merc said:

Fail to see how making a rare, non-deliberate mistake like leaving a tool under a bonnet relates to any sort of 'attitude' issue. Clearly you've never worked on a car before, or made a mistake so it would seem.
P.S. Might wanna check the undertray, too

Precisely. I work on all my cars. Golden rule before shutting any bonnet - visual scan of the engine bay for tools.
As will the tech involved here. He doesn't give away snap on tools that he's bought for fun!Slightly different environment though to working at home - tech will be under pressure, often with several jobs across severance cars in the go at once. Or it might have been an apprentice error.
People make mistakes/forget stuff from time to time.
Personally I wouldn't ever think of keeping stuff like this - just the same as I wouldn't keep a wallet I found on the train.
I'd want my stuff returning, so I do the same.

I doubt people realise a lot of them use their own tools though and expect it to be a dealer part.Slightly different environment though to working at home - tech will be under pressure, often with several jobs across severance cars in the go at once. Or it might have been an apprentice error.
