So not sure if this is me expecting the car to do something it just doesn’t or if it should be doing something and isnt..

Ive had BMWs in the past and when i have reached my destination and pushed the start/stop button to shut the engine off the car has put itself into park (automatic box) and applied the electronic hand brake...

The Mercedes doesn’t - as i found out the other day when it rolled forward which gave me a shock! So now i make sure that I push the button on the right stalk to pop it in park.

Is this just a shortcoming on Mercs? Should my car do it and it has a fault? Curious....

I have a 2016 c350e (think its a W205?!)

If i dont press the park button, and simply turn off the car, it puts the gearbox into neutral without the handbrake.
If I have it in park, turn it off, as the drivers door is opened you can hear the handbrake engaging.

I 'think' that if you open the drivers door with the car in drive, aside from the usual bings and bongs warning of impending doom, it puts the handbrake on automatically - i say 'think' as I rarely do this - usually ive talked the wife into opening the gate or whatever! :-)

Your's seems to be doing the same as mine? I did notice there is a manual handbrake button by my right knee - no idea how to use it however!

Cheers
Rob

Mine's older but I'm pretty sure the above is correct and it shifts to neutral on stopping the engine. IIRC it puts it into Park if you open the door with the engine running but I don't know what happens if you've already stopped it. You could always have a gander at the handbook. smile

thanks guys. It does put itself in neutral if I switch off the engine. Will just make sure i put it in park... already in the habit now but just had me wondering.

I press the stop button while its still in gear, which puts the car in neutral. When I then open the drivers door, the electronic handbrake is engaged.

I wonder if this logic is implemented to allow a borked car to be towed (eg onto a recovery truck) without the transmission locking itself. Old-style auto selectors usually have a concealed mechanism to manually take out of Park for such instances, but on a stalk-mounted one this might an easier solution.

There's a really annoying way to switch the transmission into P, and thats to open the drivers door at low speed to see how close to that broken kerbstone you can get. Instant P. Instant stop.
