We want to add a car to the fleet and the requirements are a 3.0 turbo diesel engine, 4 doors, a high quality car and a decent turn of pace when required. £11,000 gets us a very nice CLS Grand Edition or C Class, A bit more puts us in an E350 and i noticed that £15,000 buys an S Class with moderate miles.
Will the E Class be a much nicer place to be than a CLS or C? Will the S Class be THAT much more expensive to run if fitted with the same engine and will that be a better place to spend the holiday hours than the rest? Any thoughts appreciated.

CLS is actually a better place than the E.

C is nice but more cramped than E.

Remember that CLS is a 4 seater.

S is most regal and generally expensive of the bunch.

I have a 2012 mercedes cls350cdi amg. Im not exaggerating stating that it is a class above the e class in terms of interior quality and exterior styling. My father in law has an e class and it doesnt look or feel anywhere as nice! If you can stretch the budget a bit more you can get the more recent shape cls which i think looks even better than the grand coupe cls. If you need 5 seats go for the shooting brake cls

My other half has a CLS350 which is a the 3.0 V6 diesel and I'm thoroughly impressed with it. My daily driver is an old E320 so 3.2 straight six diesel and the 3.0 feels a bit more responsive (7 speed as well) but has similar torque. The CLS feels more engaging to drive but my E is a 2003 so not comparable really.

Depends what kind of driving you want to do OP, if you want to sit and waft in maximum comfort then the S Class will be pretty unbeatable. The CLS is a four seater and still very comfy, probably the prettiest too. The E is what the CLS is based on anyway so similar just a little more practical.

CLS's are halfway between the E and the S Class, so higher quality materials etc than the E. however they arent as practical.
