Couldn't see a thread on this but wanted to share that I changed tyres on my R171 a few months back and have now covered 3000 miles on new ones, 1,000 of which was at speed in Germany.
The Pirelli P Zero were OEM I believe, and were terrible with poor grip in most weather, but particularly in cold weather, when they were quite dangerous - even with 2-4mm.
I changed to Goodyear Eagle F1, which grip better, particularly when cold, and produce much less road noise, so you can enjoy the sound of the engine more!

The Pirellis have been useless in anything other than perfect conditions on every car I have owned (I agree with your statement, positively dangerous in my experience). I can see why AMG now opt for Continental as a chosen partner over Pirelli. ContiSportContact 5s have been on both of my SLK55s ever since.
The Eagle F1 was my second choice when picking new tyres for the 55 this summer. Went for the new Fulda SportControl 2 which I thought was great value for money at 320 quid for 2x 225 and 2x 245 section tyres. Only did a few hundred mls before I tucked the car in for winter but really cannot complain. Will see from April onwards how they hold up.
