Had a local friend I know at a Merc specialist look at mine before buying it because it felt sluggish. He gave me a call and said, "I found out why it's slow when I looked at the back of the car". "Oh no, what's up?" I asked. He replies "It says 300TD" and pissed himself laughing. Bastard.
Two most expensive bits (if you go non-dealer) that go wrong are:
Check autobox kickdown and how it 'feels' between changes. Any slipping and it's £600 for a reconditioned one.
Harsh ticking from the engine? That'll be £400 for a new set of tappets.
Other than that they are pretty bullet-proof.
