There is significant older MB-love on the barge thread, and a number of threadists would like to recreate the appearance of the original number plates the cars were supplied with.

There are a number of suppliers of plates with period-correct fonts, but what we lack is details of logos, fonts, layout etc. of 1980s and 1990s dealer plates. (I realise this is a strange fetish, but please bear with me / us).

If anyone with older MB dealer plates would care to post photos it would be appreciated - by all means obscure the number if you wish, but if you could leave the date suffix it will "date" the plate.

Thanks.

Useful thread, I would like to establish the design of plate from the MB dealer Bradshaw & Webb of Chelsea in 1987.

Another Woking Motors example, April 1990:

I would like to find what Mercedes-Benz Gt. West Rd. plates looked like circa 1993.

My search for Normand has found this, which may be as good as I'll find. Whether it's correct for 1998, I don't know. I had to zoom in, so I am not sure if DMB can work with it.

This one looks better, but very faint. Definitely Normand (Mayfair)

Good thread resurrection!

This off a car currently for sale- appears original judging by the matching window sticker:

Hughes of Beaconsfield were a very enthusiastic dealer back in the day, developing the twin turbo 6 cylinder engine with Turbo Technics.

A mate had the original development car a few years back, a black 320 sportline manual, and my C43 estate came from them in 2000.

If anyone can provide decent photos, I'm sure this company would be happy to make the plates up, along with dealer stickers.

I wonder if it is worth approaching the older dealers, to see if they might still have any old stock?

That Hughes one looks correct, as I remember them using two steering wheels either side of their name

Normand has gone, I think absorbed into MB Retail

Many of the number plate manufacturers on ebay that offer "show plates" without having to see your V5 will use a machine that can accept your own dealer logo as a jpeg file. They also have a variety of number plate fonts and I think they can even use your own if you send a jpeg of the whole plate. I use one firm regularly to produce local dealer plates with my cherished numbers at a fraction of the price the dealer would charge.

Would you care to recommend the company you use, save us trying various other ones first that might not be up to standard. wink

Fancy plates never bother responding, after a few more dead ends I got pointed to a guy in Donegal who does Signs (and plates).

I decided to recreate the Normand logo myself. ( I didnt realise I was so anal but I'd like my replacement plates to be exactly the same as the originals!)

The font is as near as damnit to my original plate. Hopefully I can find someone who will be able to use this logo on a pre 2001 plate...
uploaded here in case its of anyuse to anyone...

I use a lovely chap called Koz at Pukar Designs - he does near replicas of plates, rear window dealer sticker and tax disc holders.
