Like the look of these very much - thinking of a 2012 model. Anything bad I need to know?

I have a '14 250 CDI Shooting Brake & really like it. Almost 2 years and 35k in and nothing bad to report back on.
Tyre noise is an issue, but it was the same in my previous E-class estate.
Had a small coolant leak found & fixed at the last service. Previous E-class 250 CDI had 3 of these in short succession. Seems to be a design issue, so speak to a dealer. It wasn't a major problem
Still on the original brakes & back tyres (mostly motorway driving).
Just replaced the fronts at 34k. £145 each for decent tyres, so rather pleased with that.

Had a Westfalia removable tow bar fitted by a local company. Car tows really well.

It's a lovely place to sit, and still looks good in my opinion.

Had a 350CDI (63 plate, pre facelift) since just before Christmas.

38k in now, had four new tyres at 34k and returned under AUC warranty for grinding brakes, no quibble from dealer and replaced front disks and pads.

Overall I'm impressed, touching wood its been fine. There was a rattle from the back, I diagnosed it as the roll up cover thing that pulls over the load area. Load area is bigger than you would think, picked family up from their world cruise yesterday and it took three large holdalls and about six hand luggage sized bags. Power tailgate is a nice thing and lets you know if it wont shut without any fuss - one I had on a Q7 a while back used to hit an obstacle and put more effort in, something I thought would eventually break itself.

I love the looks of it both inside and out, seats are comfortable and its good on a long journey. I'd agree with the tyre noise (mine has the 19s) but the engine is quiet at speed and it has a semi-PH 6cyl roar around town.

Gearbox, initially I was concerned it was jerky around town but it seems to have got better, you only really notice changes when going into or out of first gear - in "E" mode you ignore first gear, oddly. Research tells me that the gearbox learns your driving style - mine is a bit heavy footed - and if you wander into the polar opposite it can feel confused. Solution is "S" mode all the time in town for me, havent really noticed any mpg detriment, averages about 800 to a tank (£70 standard derv) dependant on use.

Sound system, nav, displays all good and feels more upmarket than the A6 and 530d I tried. Mine has the self park thing which is impressive however little used. Oddly the salesman didnt mention it as a feature so you may have to ask if you have it on any car you test drive.

Options list is vast for these, sadly those available are small in number. I wish, having experienced it in the hire e class I had, mine had the ambient lighting ticked and the reverse camera as they both add to the experience. Heated seats are a surprising option, on a car like this you'd expect them to be standard, mine has them and they are boiling on their top setting. The courtesy e class had the white leather (mine is black) and with only 3000 miles on a 65 plate the discolouration to them was alarming, something to bear in mine perhaps.

Performance, the v6 is a real cracker, best overtaking car I've had to date, on a par with the e38 740 I had at uni, although with polar opposite mpg!

What would I change? I'd love to be able to code the thing so that I didnt have to turn the stop/start nonsense off and put it in sport every time I set off but obviously this is a first world problem. Also the irritating "please be careful you are driving at 2am" driver alert thing is a bit irritating and I'd add that to the turn off at startup list.

Hope this helps!

Got to say I think the CLS shooting brake is the prettiest estate car on the market.

Not sure where I got this from but I didn't think the CLS was type approved for towing?

I've had a 350d since December (65plate) 4,000 miles so far. Only problem has been that a wheel sensor had a fit on the autobahn by Stuttgart and it was 6 weeks for s replacement - end result was something loose that MB would have found and fixed quickly if they had given me a courtesy car rather than saying they'd wait for the part to be delivered.

It is a lovely place to sit and the only thing I miss (mine has the premium pack) is the hard drive for music that my last car - BMW Z4 - had.

Are you sure yours doesn't have it, mine does and I'm pretty sure it wasn't an option - forgive me if wrong, is "music register" an option, if so you can copy songs and folders across from USBs or SD cards. 10GB I think.

I was told that the coupe isn't, but the Shooting Brake is. Weird.
Towbars are readily available as it's just an e-class underneath.

just reiterating what others have said regarding positives. had mine for 2 years done 15k miles in it and it's really good. small problem with boot shutting button that the dealers tried to fob me off about but eventually fixed under warranty. otherwise i can highly recommend them. i have a pre facelift 13 model 350 v6 version. excellent value for money

Thanks for that, I'll go and check properly. In the Z4 if you put a CD in it defaulted to offering to copy it to the hard drive. When the CLS didn't, I just thought it didn't have it.

Had a 2013 model for 2 years and 20k miles. Never missed a beat. Comfortable, refined, fast enough, and pretty decent boot which is less compromised by the sloping roof line than the looks would suggest. Highly recommended.

Considering a 350 shooting brake for my wife to use with 2 young kids, never considered them really until I saw the price of a used one. 2013's for around £20k from main dealers.

Are they still holding up well?

My 2014 shooting brake now has 43k miles on it. Apart from 2 punctures it's been faultless.

Old thread, been looking at these, toss up between the A6 3.0 Avant, or 530d, not had a merc before but have a 56 plate A6 saloon at the moment, do love the Quattro.

These any good in winter or would i want winter tyres on it. the A6 being Quattro is fine without winters due to it's 4x4 drivetrain.

Fine for the vast majority of winter (wet, windy, cold), brilliant. Absolutely useless in the 2 days of snow we get.

I've actually not had mine through a winter yet, but it'll be the same as the E Class that preceeded it - heavy, RWD and fat low profile summer tyres don't work in the snow, but feel very surefooted and stable in windy, wet weather with summer tyres with decent tread to disperse water, which is what a UK winter really is isn't it?

Had mine three years so it has seen some snow although not that much. Using it locally generally in towns, it was fine on normal tyres provided it was fresh snow and not ice. For the few days it would be needed i decided against a set of winters and just didn't use it if it looked too icy.

Mines going back to MB today so if you see GY65XNJ in the system (Cavansite Blue 350d with premium pack) it's been fine for the 3 years and 27k miles I've had it.
