W211 SBC Replacement
Discussion
Hi all I've got the following warning message on my dash:-
"Service brake! Visit Workshop!"
My car was recently in for a serice so I got Mercedes to check this out.
They've told me that the unit needs replacing and has a lifespan of ten years.
Over here in Australia they cost $2,865 new from Mercedes. I have seen second hand ones for sale on ebay however for a lot cheaper. I've been told by a mechanic though that you cannot fit a second hand one as they care coded to a particular car. Does anyone know if this is true?
Mercedes also uncovered the following list of problems:-
-Left hand front lower ball joint replacement
-Left and right engine mounts replacement
-Transmission mount replacement
-Left and right caster arm replacement
-Secondary air injection pump replacement
-SBC brake pump replacement
-Left and right rear brake hoses.
As you can see I have quite a few things requiring attention so I'd like to save as much as possible on a cheaper SBC brake pump if I can.
Thanks in advance.

If it is a 211 then I would take it out of Mercedes now and get it done elsewhere. It has to be 7 years old at least, so no value in taking it to Mercedes any more surely?
As said, you can buy from Bosch direct now, so don't by it from Mercedes with their 300% mark up.
Also, get the codes read and make sure it hasn't just hit the limit?
Earlier cars had 200k pedal presses and later ones 400k, or something like that, you can see on STAR how many you have done, you may be able to do a reset and start the counter again if yours was a car that was set up for 200k attenuations.

Was the message in RED?
This could mean you need a reset of the counter...
This means you have a pump that is failing....
Mercedes answer to both is "Replace".
Another way to tell is if your braking was greatly reduced, you have about 10% braking power when the pump fails.
You can also buy one of these, but I would still get an indy to read the sbc system and check how many pedal presses have been used, you don't want to reset it if it is genuinely at the end of its life.

Hi all thanks for the replies so far.
I wouldn't get it fixed at Mercedes, I just took it for a service there as the pricing is competitive for a car of my age.
Mercedes told me that they updated the software but that this didn't fix the problem and that a new unit would be required.
Do you have a link to the Bosch part, I tried searching on the website but I couldn't find it.
No the message is the first one, it's not red.
Right ok that suck, even more reason for me to try and locate it direct from Bosch then.
What about the secondary air injection pump, could I get away with using a second hand one of those?
As for all the other parts, I tracked down a place local to me that sells after market parts which I bought today.

Be very careful what Mercedes tell you, there answer to everything is upload new software or replace.
In teh case of the SBC it is looking at how many presses have already been made and then resetting the counter if there is scope to do so, I don't think many/amy dealers do that.
I would join these two, someone just did the SBC pump and posted up info on one of them, have a search....

This is definitely a reset counter issue. I did this for my car 2003 about 2 years ago. The section to reset the counter is in German so the engineer needs to know what part of the menu to go into. I had mine done by an indie but that was £60 wasted since it was only temporary. MBS in Southampton took 2 hrs and about £150 sorted.I know Southampton is a little far from Aus but at least you know it can be done.

Ok thanks, I'll will definitely look into this. I'll get the garage that I take it to, to see if they can reset it. If it works then great, it would save me a lot of money.
How do you know if it works. Is it possible that the message could come back after a while and then a new unit would be required?
What about the secondary air injection pump, can I use a second hand one? If not then I will order a new one.

Secondary air pump - there are pattern parts at about 300 over here

Yes I've read that can be done but if I can pick up a second hand unit for $100 and that will sort the problem then I'd rather just do that for the cost.
My main concern is the SBC, I'm getting an indy to see if they can determine how many presses have been registered and reset it if it is the lower range.

Right so I took it to an Indy to get my parts fitted and they were able to get a reading for the number of pedal presses. They gave me a print out which stood at 436,000 so looks like I won't be able to do the reset and require a SBC replacement.
Does anyone have any links to where I get a new one direct from Bosch overseas.
