Any owners lurking?

Been looking at year old ones and they seem to be stylish solution for everyday motoring with a difference.

Plenty of 250CDIs about but do you really need the 350CDI for the complete experience?

Drove the 250 and it wansn't exactly lacking, but neither was it super refined.

Interested in some real world experiences, mpg and must have extras.

Many thanks

I've just picked up a CLS250AMG Shooting Brake after having an E350 Coupe and ML350 and have to say I am very impressed with the refinement of the 4 cylinder engine. If I had to be critical of anything I'd say its a little rattly on start-up if you are outside the car, but once its warm and when on the move you cannot tell its just the 4pot. Torque of the engine is plenty and it can go when needs too.

Ride is very comfortable and supremely quiet at speed.

I don't think you need the V6 personally but if you could why not as I doubt there would be much in it in terms of mpg. My car has covered just over 1k miles and I'm averaging 44-46mpg on long runs already.

Either engine is fine in the car so concentrate on getting the spec right...

I got my CLS 250CDi Shooting Brake back in June, and really like it. I traded up from an E250 Cdi Estate and think that the refinement is better in the CLS, but the tyre noise is still a bit excessive. It is the AMG Sport model and running on 19 inch wide tyres, so that might have something to do with it!

The CLS is much more stylish than the E ever was, but things like heated seats were an option on the CLS, but standard fit on my E. Strange.

By 44k the E250 was loosened up nicely and delivered about 45mpg on a run. After just 3k the CLS is beating that without too much effort. Maybe it is because it is a bit sleeker?

I had a towbar fitted last month by a local fitter and was suprised that you can only fit them on the shooting brake, and that they are not available for the coupe. Not sure why that is.

The interior is lovely, and things like the leather dash and ambient lighting make it a lovely place to sit. I'm looking forward to the next 4 years of ownership.

It depends what you are coming from.

I came from a 320 E class and tried and bought a 250. Drove it hard and found it just did not have the push that the 6 cylinder had and so got rid within two weeks. Paid more for the 3.0 V6 and instantly knew I was happy. Power wise they are close in real world terms but one has more umph. They are a great looking car and internally look and feel lovely.

i traded in my 2007 E220CDI for a CLS 350 CDI Shooting Break about 3 months ago. I have driven to Swizterland in it and down to Cornwall. I have also used it for a few odd trips here and there. Covered about 3000 miles since purchase. It was registered in March 2013 so was roughly a year old when I bought it with 8000 miles on the clock i think.

The car is a sport version with AMG stuff here and there, so looks very good. I test drove a 250CDI earlier in the year. I bought the 350 because it was in my opinion excellent value for money in comparison to a lot of the 250's out there and was the exact spec I was after (AMG finish, black, almond leather, sunroof). Ave mpg in my tenure in 38.4 over the 3000 miles.

It is frankly superb. Smooth, refined, fast (when you want it to be), firm in ride but doesn't feel uncomfortable at all on the pot holed roads around me despite have 19 inch wheels. I believe the 350 has air suspension which the 250 does not, so i believe the ride is supposedly better on the 350.

very comfortable seats, plenty of room in the back for 3 adults, boots is practical but obviously not as good as the e class due to the roof sloping down, but it's a negligible compromise for me.

i rate ownership to date as 10/10. i can't fault it. really pleased i bought it and i think it looks great.

i paid £34k for mine which i thought was a good price (from a bentley dealer not a merc garage).

when i test drove the 250 it was great - can't think back that far to compare it to the 350 in terms of ride but i like to think the 350 has to be better!

i say go for it - if you can get hold of a 350, better yet.

if you want to know more, PM me or post up your questions.

I've had my 350CDI since last July, bought new. Covered just over 12000 miles and averaging around 30mpg though a long motorway run will see it hit 45mpg.
Mines is bog basic, no options, and has proved pretty reliable and a pleasant place to be.
It is on it's third battery, the first one failed at the dealers during handover, it lasted three weeks then failed but I must say Mercedes rescue were superb at getting me back on the road.
I've also had two punctures which is damn annoying but I can't really blame the car for that.

I have gone from cream leather and now on black. I always thought that cream would show the dirt and black was easier. I think it is the other way round, you get a mark or dirt on black leather and it looks poor, cream is far more forgiving.

As for air suspension, I don't think you can tell the difference.

Internet connection is something that I found did not work because the car is a 13 plate and the bluetooth version is a little used one, not what you would expect, google for more details. I believe that 14 plate cars should allow you to get an internet connection if you have this via your bluetooth on a mobile phone.

Love mine v8 tt
Although just bought 4 new tyres as front had tear down to wire picked up on service and both front and rears worn dramatically on inside, so had the tracking checked and now spot on.
I would recommend getting the tracking checked, mine was way out on the rears, but due to amg tyres being 295 width I hadn't noticed too much, dealer said at service I must have hit something, funny how all 4 were out!
Mines in white but only usually gets cleaned when serviced anyway!!!
I've had a new e estate and found this a lot less of a barge.
Reading some of the posts above, I wish I got 40mpg and had only paid 34k- think mines lost that in a year !!!!

I drive a 350 and it's fast, smooth and all the things you'd expect. Not particularly economical compared to big BMW diesels but I am in town a fair bit. The car is a good drive with really exceptional steering so I think it's worth getting a strong engine to suit.

I have two young kids and it fits prams, cots, and all the other stuff you need for extended trips away with ease. The boot is huge so it's very practical.

Only thing I've changed is the tyres. Ditch the P-Zeros they are terrible. I've put Sport Maxx on and the car feels much better for it.

Boot size- I have fitted the old E class estate boot liner into the CLS, it does need the seats down to get it in given the smaller opening but it does prove the floor space is the same, you just lose space in the opening.

Picked up my 350 SB this week.

I'm glad I found one with full air suspension and the V6.

I tried the 4 pot and it was OK but the car deserves the 6 cylinder.

I also tried a 350 without the full air suspension and the ride was not great.

Great value overall and looking forward to putting lots of miles on this as it's a comfortable place to be.

I assume you will have put quite a few miles on over 2 then. Did you have any reliability issues?

I really like the suspension in sport mode. Not sporty at all but comfortable and reasonably nmble for a car of its size.

The Designo interior makes it feel a much more expensive car.

I also love the 9 speed gearbox. Like all autos it can't always choose the best gear but the paddles work instantly.

The headlamps on the facelift are great too.

First was a 350 diesel. No issues whatsoever. Did about 28000 in it.

Second is a monster 63 AMG-S. As easy to drive day to day as the diesel, but with an unbelievable soundtrack and insane power on tap if you press the AMG button or turn it to S+. It had a slight blow from the head gasket at first MOT which was annoying but repaired for free by Merc, who seem to step up the customer care a notch when you drive an AMG into the forecourt. I absolutely love the AMG...it’s just gorgeous to drive and the CLS is a really decent steer in base form so I’m sure you can imagine what it’s like with 580+ bhp and better suspension!
