Parents have done the decent thing and have just bought an S Class, mid 2002 model, which happens to have a Nokia cradle in it.

Me being eternally optimistic, I plugged in my Nokia 6310i (which fitted perfectly), and tried accessing the menu via the in-dash screen. It reports that phone is not installed.

Now my questions are...
* Is the 6310i too new? Should I try and get hold of a 6210 and try that?
* Does whatever Nokia I get (6310 or 6210) need a Mercedes software variant, like the Motorolas in Jaguars need to be of a certain type.
* Should I give up and leave them to it and let MB sort it out?

Any help very much appreciated chaps.

Best regards,

Andy

I'd guess it is a software problem.

Incidently my mothers Oct 2002 SL500 came with a 6310i built in, don't know if that would be a 03 model year though.

Had the same problem myself...I investigated upgrades and it all resulted in a 'no can do' i.e. when it rolls out the factory with a 6210 fit, that is all you can fit. No special software on phone required though. Check with Merc what the exact Nokia model that the car was originally fitted for.

I got a second hand (standard) 6210 off eBay and signed up with Vodafone, as they are the only provider that can give you a cloned chip i.e. 2 SIMS, one for the car phone and one for your normal mobile. That way you can keep the phone in the car at all times and not have to carry around and use what is today and old phone.

Hope it helps.

You'll want MB Part Number - B 67875822 @ £110.87 + VAT.

That's the new 6310i cradle, but be warned it doesn't have the nice chrome finish your old one probably has.

Merc are so out of date on phones' that its a waste of time going for factory fit. Shame as retro-fit does'nt allow use of the steering wheel controls. All depends on whether you want to look a nerd in bars etc.

The Nokia 6310i is probably the most popular phone amongst European business people. But, in common with most phone makers, Nokia have been seduced by the kiddie market and are only selling phones aimed at yoof. With silly toys like cameras and daft ringtones.....

Please - a phone needs only to be a phone!
