i have only got around 10 days to wait until i get my 350, there are companies which charge around £600 above the normal retail price for preplaced orders, this is what i have done, only had to wait around 3 months and was able to speck the car as i wanted it.most people i have spoken to say its i big improvement over old model, depending if you like the new body shape. www.benzworld.org/ is a link for you to get more info. cheers
I've had one, really very good car, great engine sound, traction control kept jumping in but other than that it was wicked although i've already part ex'd it for 997, it was very very good, got AMG 55slk coming 10th january which should be ballistic!
I know someone who is selling his position for january 350, if your interested i'll email his number.

Perhaps it's just that people have begun to realise that the new SLK is rather over-hyped?
New look - OK. Apart from the MGF antenna!
New steering - GREAT!!
New engine - good.
New transmission - good.
New boot - crap.
New interior - cheap fittings and far too many silly toys.
Don't EVER pay over the odds - it just isn't worth it! Sooo glad that I bought a good, low mileage high-spec'd SLK320 instead of a SLK350!

So what you're saying is, althought the new car has been generally compared favourably to the Boxster in almost all magazines, and the old one was usually compared with a drinks trolley and generally associated with hairdressers and blondes, you're glad you saved some cash and bought an obsolete model. It takes all sorts I suppose
The real problem with the new SLK is that it is seriously overpriced compared to other markets such as the US (like maybe 35%) and Germany (20%). And by the time you spec it up a bit, it's very pricy. The UK seems to be the only place there is a waiting list. In the US, you can walk into any dealer and order a car for delivery three months later. Given that they clearly make a load more profit per unit in the UK than the US, you'd think they might re-allocate some production, but evidently not. DC evidently think they can manipulate the UK market by restricting supply to keep the price up, but that's a very dangerous game.
only last month j.clarkson wrote in times newspaper how good the slk 350 was !!! he said mercedes must be making it at a loss after comparing it to sl 500 that he has owned. he did say the interior finish was not as good as it could be , but compared to the sl500 he would rather save the money and have the slk !! like clarkson or not most of the time, he does talk sense.
as for me, after looking at new and old slk's together i prefer the new model every time, i know the interior is not as good as my old audi tt but after driving a 350 it does leave a very big smile on your face, that new v6 engine is great. as for the boot space its better on the new slk ,but its know good moaning about it, i dont think you spend 40k on a car lightly then moan about somthing you already know about. cheers all

Hi chaps,
Thought I'd add to this post to say that I'm picking up my SLK350 tomorrow Getting excited now, so just had to tell everyone - apologies for the indulgance. Its an 'enthusiast' spec car - manual box, 17" wheels with sports suspension, and not too many toys...
I'll post a link to some pictures soon, and let you know my first impressions. Does anyone know what the running-in recommendations are btw?

To report back - two days in and I'm still grinning. The car feels very well tied down and the ride is good - runs the Boxster very close indeed overall for handling. Engine is very torquey - I'm trying to keep under 4k for the first few hundred miles but the car is brisk nonetheless. Certainly quicker than my old M3 using the same rev range. Seems very keen to rev and the noise whilst subdued has a great underlying growl. Six speed manual box is snickety and whole drivetrain is very smooth. Cockpit feels like a special place to be (I have no issues with quality) and the whole look and feel of the car make each drive an event... Getting carried away now so I will stop gabbling, but suffice to say I'm totally satisfied!

Well, the Top Gear review was brief and looked like it had been chopped down to fit into a shorter slot in the programme. Basically the SLK350 and Boxster S were driven on the test circuit, and the Boxster S annihilated the SLK 350. The difference was nearly 5 seconds IIRC.
However, it could have been a fairer comparison. The car tested had the standard 17" wheels with relatively high profile tyres. It also looked like it had the standard suspension, which is, let's be honest, OK for a boulevard cruiser but is just too soft for a sports car. If it had had optional 18" wheels with lower profile tyres, and sports suspension (40% stiffer), I'm sure it would have been closer while still being £3K cheaper than the Boxster S. I doubt it would actually be as quick as the Boxster S though, even so. The SLK has other attributes in its favour of course, compared to the Boxster.
