from what i remember hearing on various merc sites apart from the obvious full merc history and checkin all over for rust, the w210 has a bad rep for it. Brakes are the thing, easy to warp and can wear quite a lot and are chuffin expensive for new discs. course thats only what i think i remember.
I've had one in that past and did about 20k trouble free miles-and they were hard miles!!
I've now got another one which is one of the last ones made and it's cracking-the year 2000 cars have much better plastics inside and a much more kit generally as well as different skirts and bumpers etc-cracking cars, not as sporty as an M5 but more relaxed and in the real world just as quick!

Also been looking at these for a while and am interested as to how you get on. I hope to start looking in earnest mid jan. I have done some research and they sound pretty robust but like any performance car when big stuff lets go can be very pricey.Cats 1k each bank and transmissions as well recon 1.5k.
Good luck!
Good luck!
Get one-that's the reason i'm on my second one!! Yes things like brakes etc are expensive but order the original equipment stuff from Eurocarparts-i did when my last one needed new front discs and pads. They came in genuine mercedes parts boxes but where over 50% less that the main dealer would charge for the same parts!!! I'm had a 3200GT Maserati and it feels quicker than that and of course it will run to the moon and back. It also has that something extra that makes people double take and they can't quiet put their finger on it but it's subtle and fast...very fast and makes a good noise.
Or this one, one year older, less mileage and a lot cheaper:

Hi - I've just bought one. Picking it up on Saturday. I've been reading Pistonheads for a while, but was not expecting to get an E55, so didn't see your advice before I bought. Yes it has some minor rust coming through - especially around the front arches - which was a bit of a shock considering my old J Reg 300CE has none at all. Also done a few miles 140k, so I'm not sure what to expect. I know my cars and I still feel its a bit of a gamble. Drives lovely with fMBsh. Price ? - sub 12k. Anything I need to keep my eye on ?.Have I made a mistake ??!??. I will enjoy whatever

Other than that, MAS sensors can give up the ghost, about 200 quid a side of the vee, you'll know when it goes because the car runs like a sack of shit....
But....a great purchase. I'm jealous, and pictures at your leisure sir!
