ML500 versus GL500

Hi all,
At the start of next year i'll be getting the new family bus, I originally wanted a GL420 but was really dissappointed with how the gearbox reacted to the engine, the engine was great but it was permanently grabbing too low a gear and ruined the drive for me.
I then settled on an ML500 after having used one for a week, it would be around a 2007 model which is when the change from the 5.0 to 5.5 litre engined occured?
How does the GL500 compare though? I was seeing just over 20mpg in the ML while doing a mix of cross country and fun drives so if a GL can get similar I would start looking at them also.
Does anyone have any experience of the GL500?
