Hi

I am going to view this at the weekend
http://www.adverts.ie/car/mercedes-benz/190/1992-m...

Are they as good as you all say as I really do fancy an old Merc to tinker with...

In a word...YES!

(IMHO, possibly the best mass produced car ever made!)

Old cars now, and not invulnerable to all the same pitfalls as any old, well-built car. I'm sure if you get a good one it'll be a great car to own!

they are cracking old cars,

As with any old car you need to keep on top of things, which is exactly what you want if you like a bit of tinkering.

They are properly built, and that one looks to be in good shape

have you been over to www.mercedes-190.co.uk ?

Yes and no. Yes, they really were built to a different level and are solid as hell. But to drive, they are pretty awful! As long as you intend to waft and take it easy they are fine, but the 190 left me cold as a driving experience.

I had a 2.0 for a while some time back,
As with the 124 e class I don't think there ever was
Or ever likely to be a better built more solid car,
My only gripe really was the brake pads last 2 mins on the front
Due to thin non vented disks , but having said that they stopped very well considering.
The only other negative really was the fact it won't set your driver excitement level to maximum
But that's not really what my 2.0 was about, so overall they are a very good car and Mercedes has never quite been the same since IMO

The upside is that they can take lots of abuse and still keep going, a downside is that some owners run them forever with no maintenance and abuse them.

My experience of the larger W124 is that parts and labour are cheap if you find a good mechanic - with no exception I have been told how they are relatively easy to work on.

However making them perfect can become an obsession (naming no names here smile ) and consume vast amounts of time and money as such lovely cars are simply not made any more.

After poking around my W124 my father is on the lookout for a 190 2.6 as a pootling car. He's a recently retired aero engineer and was that impressed with how my W124 has taken 150k+ miles and 22 years.

And I don't even own one anymore but if you look on my website you'll see I've owned four:

They might have their faults...but most of these are often minor and well-known. The support on that forum mentioned above is second to none. Parts are plentiful and cheap. They are easy to work on AND they are damned tough, well-built cars! If you don't believe me...ask some of the people in this video! laugh

Try to count them:

I'm sure they are ok for what they are - a very basic, cheap, old car which can run with little care. But I think it is another example of no mans land. Not sporting. Not going to be amazing for wafting luxury. I'd opt for an LS every day of the week at this budget. You also won't look like a third world mini cab driver. But that aside, I do get the basic no nonsense appeal in a way.

That example does seem tidy.

Yes, good old cars. Solid and somehow very appealing in the tank like way they drive. The handling is actually pretty good - but there's limited feedback and a lot of roll, so it's not a thrill a minute kind of machine.

If anyone fancies it I'm going to MOT and sell mine soon. It's been standing a few years because I couldn't bear to sell it, but has a good spec - metallic black, cream MBTex, 2.0 injection engine, auto, and lots of options. Owned it since 2001 - 2nd owner. Sorry, this isn't meant to be a hijack but I thought it might be relevant!

I had a 1.8 auto for a while in almandine. It was a low miles 1989 model, but unfortunately the previous owner neglected it, he was one of those 'do nothing until MOT time' and then get them to do the bare minimum. I inherited it when he died, nobody else in the family wanted it, they just saw it as a shonky old Merc.

It was obvious Mercedes designed and built it properly, but you have to be very wary of rust. Particularly the later examples which had trims that hide all the rot, at the base of the rear window also.

The owners forum has a fair bit of good information about Mercedes and 190Es, but it is also incredibly cliquey and they're obsessed with the idea of Mercedes making a loss on the 190E because they spent so much money on R&D, and that it is the best built car in the world without any flaws at all. It also has a lot of idiocy about putting HID kits in the horribly inefficient reflector headlights.

Having said that, they're comfortable wafters and the auto gearbox is solid, when taken care of they will be a very good, easy to maintain car. I would certainly have another if an opportunity popped up. I would prefer a straight-6 though with MB tex and air con, but I doubt I will find a good one. hehe

Thanks for the Feedback guys, I will go and see it and I'll probably end up buying it if its any good.

I have found myself in quite the quandary tbh as I keep looking at 124 coupes, s2 944s, e36 coupe.

I have my usual 4 month car itch you see and seeing as I cant find any reason the sell my e39 I need to buy something for the garage.

I do really love old Mercs but at the same time I want something to make my heart race a little when I sneak into the garage for a peek...

This is the 190 you want then Wolfy, and it's not even full-hit tax over here wink

I think late eighties into the early nineties was a good period for cars, especially the German stuff as this is where they got their reputation, perhaps a bit further back but really VW's, pre Golf, at the time, i.e. into the seventies were a joke.

Things like this Merc and the MK1/2 Golf GTI, robust and they had proper engine electronics that had been well developed but hadnt turned into some overly complex bus system that required components to be married to the car by computer, they had lost the points by then, Carburettors were on the way out so they were more consistent.
