Broken bonnet suport strut on SLK ?

The pneumatic bonnet support strut on my 2003 SLK320 has just packed up. The service manager at the local Merc dealer says he never heard of it before. Anyone else had the same problem? Just wonder how common it is. Genuine replacement ones are damned expensive.....$335 plus tax. I managed an aftermarket model on line for $216.....hope it fits.
