I am becoming tempted by a SL350 this is fairly awful as it would mean parting company with my slk 32 amg which I seldom use but really love. Can anyone tell me if the sl is such a good car and some realistic running costs.

If you're on about the R230 version then there are plenty of things to go wrong - however with the wisdom of hindsight I'd say a 350 is a much more reasonable bet than the 500 as it doesn't have ABC. Lovely cars to drive and look at though.

It'll be a bit slow compared with your SLK though.

Just as bit of advice, be aware they're are two versions of the 350 engine used in the SL. The early examples used an overbored 3.7 version of the old M112 V6 and are pretty thirsty in comparison to the later M272 engined versions. Both are quite modest in the performance stakes (especially compared to your SLK!) but lovely cars all the same.

Cant comment on the SL but I have the M272 engine in my W203 C-Class. With the 7G Box its lovely and smooth and the manual change is a nice touch. It does need to be reved hard to make decent progress though.

Or... you could get one like mine. 1.9L, four cylinder, around 90bph - lovely 4 speed box.

Now that's an SL smile
