Car is 560

I owned a 380 for a while so am aware of parcel shelf rot etc but wondered if a 560 has any specific areas?

Its a 1987 car.

One question is wheels. Its on 17" AMG style ones, would these be period? or if not are they still genuine MB?

Cheers

Nothing specific for the 560 but remember it has self-levelling rear suspension. It's bullet proof in a TE so it should be bullet proof in a SEC.

A lot of people make 17" wheels: they could be Merc or they could be third party. They are highly unlikely to be factory on a 1987 car. 17" 3-piece split rims were available from about 1990. They're worth as much as the car now.

Those are much later AMG wheels, circa mid 1990s I think.

Beware of the chrome arches being used to hid rot, they look st so I can think of no other reason for anyone to have fitted them.

Those wheels could be period. Certainly they were around in the late-80s or very early-90s. I have seen them in some contemporary reviews of early 124s with the AMG treatment. They are worth a lot of money. Check the offset is right: wheels from a 124 might not be the same as wheels intended for a 129, but that is beyond my knowledge.

Chrome arches are a very bad sign.

Maybe a case of sell th wheels (owner says worth 600 quid?) to fund som work on the rear arches.....although he says theres no rot....

Yep, get rid of the wheels (they always sell) as I don't think they are in keeping with the car. The original 15 hole alloys are perfect imo - cheaper for tyres & no doubt a better ride.

If 500=600 is achievable for the wheels it makes the whole deal seem cheap....

He's asking 1800 for the car, inc wheels....

MOT March next year, Tax till Sept and currently on 133k with a full history...and the interior is dark red leather which i think looks nice.

I don't know what genuine AMG wheels are making these days, regardless I'd still fit the originals. It's a lovely colour combo too. If you're happy with it buy it, I say.

P.s. You'll need to remove the chome arches asap.

I sold a set of those wheels from a C36 AMG for about £300 I think.

That seems pretty cheap to me for a 560. Does it have any known faults?

Bar the mystery chrome arch liners...although he says its clean...nope. Rear parcel shelf panel is solid, no rot or leaks. Good oil pressure and engine temp etc. Just had a full service too (invoice for 500 odd pounds)

Those wheels fetch £800 in good condition. They're very rare. Maybe more with centre caps and decent tyres.

However, new 15", 15-hole wheels worth having will cost £200 and tyres will cost at least £300 for four. Remember the 560 wears the rather more unusual 215/65 R 15 W size rather than the 205/65 R 15 V size worn by lesser 500s.

Medium red leather is super-duper.

The reality with these cars is that only utterly mint, box-fresh, Charles Ironside-type examples are worth any money and then they are worth quite a lot. Run of the mill cars all have numerous niggles and backlog maintenance and as a vendor you'd struggle to give one away. Which means you can get a helluva lot of car for not much money but if you cannot tolerate imperfection you will be shelling out constantly. Even by today's standards, the 560 is a very fast car, especially above 60mph. I saw 155mph on the clock of my 5.6 just the other day and it was still going.

There's a fair bit of rear screen delamination on this one. But so what? It's £1,800!

I'm not bothered about niggles really, i've owned old cars all my life and currently have a TVR...say no more!

Is the 560 a proper iron fist in a velvet glove then?

336 lb/ft, 300bhp, about 1,700kg.

0-60 is supposed to be 6.9 or 7 seconds although I reckon it is faster. 0-100 is 16 seconds. In the wet, it will spin the tyres in 3rd. To be honest it's got more power than the chassis can take sometimes. A good partner for a TVR.

Sounds addictive!

Even my old 380 would happily loose its back end in the wet around roundabouts, without even being lairy!

I can only imagine how fantastic they must be with the windows down and that 5.6 burbling away on a sunny day. My beat up 230ce was pretty good!
