After coming to Stuttgart with work for 12 years, I've finally managed to stay long enough to get to the MB Museum and well worth the wait it has beeen too!
Thought I'd share a few photos of the things I found most interesting or lovely. Still in Stuttgart, so the Porsche museum tomorrow I think!

agreed Chris, although I went to the Porsche museum today and that is pretty good too (was the new museum open when you went?)
Just to complete a very Mercedes themed trip, the taxi I got back from the airport was a W211 E220 that clicked through 333,333 miles during the trip and still seemed as quiet and smooth as a new car!
Had to get my SL500 out and go for a brisk top-down run as soon as I got home!

I'm going to MB world at Brooklands in a few weeks for a half day AMG experience, plus a one hour SLS experience, then it's off to Stuttgart the following day to look around there too. A proper MB weekend! 
That sounds like an eminently sensible way to spend a weekend. The SL experience they are advertising at the moment appeals to me: 55minutes in each of the SLK55, SL63 and SLS. I'm going to MB world at Brooklands in a few weeks for a half day AMG experience, plus a one hour SLS experience, then it's off to Stuttgart the following day to look around there too. A proper MB weekend! While you're in Stuttgart its worth a trip to the Porsche museum: its not as wide a variety of cars as the MB one (there's only so many 911s you can marvel at...) but worth the 8euros entry if you're there.
Thanks for these photos. You have reminded me that I must get back to the Museum. I'd like the see the exhibit about 60years of the SL. I've been twice so far. The first time, I drove there and back by myself from Newcastle upon Tyne. It's quite along way! I left Newcastle at lunchtime on the Friday, overnighted in Bruges, did the Museum on Saturday afternoon and was back at home in Newcastle by 8am on Sunday morning. I remember being flat out on the autobahn, 160mph on the clock (no doubt a slight over-read since it's limited to 155), roof down, when I was passed by two BMWs as if I were standing still. They must have been doing 190mph! I think I spent about £450 on petrol and £50 on Mars bars and Red Bull to keep me going!
The Porsche Museum is superb, too, and should not be missed.
Anyone would enjoy these two Museums, even females with no interest in cars. I expect children would be rapt. They are extremely good public attractions. The Merc Museum in particular sets the company in an historical context and has such a wide variety of vehicles that it cannot fail to please. For a car guy, it's nirvana.
I am vaguely planning a trip this year using the overnight ferry from Newcastle to Amsterdam. Can anyone recommend a nice area of Germany in which to break the onward journey to Stuttgart?

I've been twice too and like you (r129) I drove flat-out the first time from London to Stuttgart, learned my lesson and 2nd time I stayed at a nice small hotel near Speyer, then did the Technik museums at Speyer and Sinsheim. Stayed at a few small hotels in different parts of more rural Germany and they were all nice and friendly, I usually check out the area from google maps and see if it looks scenic but not too far from the autobahn.
If you've not been to the 2 Technik museums I highly recommend them, massive collection of air, land and sea vehicles and lots of classic Mercs at both though Sinsheim has a larger collection of cars. I also recommend the Mercedes classic centre in Fellbach if you're into pre-80's cars, a small collection but immaculate restorations.

I remember reading your description of your drive to Stuttgart on a forum somewhere and was severely tempted to drive across for my visit. I decided against it due to the risk of rubbish weather, which as it turns out was the right move as it was cold and peeing with rain pretty much all the time I was there.The Porsche Museum is superb, too, and should not be missed.

I loved the description of the main events of the 20th century as you walk from one floor to the next. As you say, it really gives you the context for the cars you look at. Nice as it would be for children, I did enjoy being child-free for once and satisfying my inner nerd by taking time to look at everything there.

I had the chance to top speed test my SEC tonight--relevant because if I go with the family we'll be going in the coupé, irrelevant because there's no way we'll be doing a vmax run--lost my bottle at an indicated 155.
