Hi All,

I have never had a MB before, so this really is new territory for me.
I can get a regular cheap supply of new, unused veggie oil.

I have the use of a 4 wheel caravan, so was looking for the most powerful MB that will eat veggie oil.

I have been lead to believe the engine to go for is the 300 turbo diesel 6 pot.
Could the knowledgeble on here please tell me what year range the 300 turbo diesel engine was used.
I want a MB that can run the oil, but not be 30 years old, I would like to look for the youngest ones available.

I am not sure about body style yet, so I will leave that open to the estates and teh saloons.

I know a little about designation codes, and I think the code I am looking at is W124.

Please correct me if I am wronge.
What was the next MB after W124 ?
Did they also use the 300 turbo diesel 6 pot?
Are they however running to much electrical engine options like ECU's etc?
I guess the older engines with little or none ECU's are best suited to veggie.?

I hope I have put enough information here to give you guys a chance to understand what I a mlooking for.

The E300 TD was manufactured between 1996 and 2000. Its chassis code is w210 (or s210 for estates). It is an extremely robust engine and runs very smoothly with plenty of power.

W124s were produced from 1986 to 1996. The diesels are non-turbocharged but incredibly robust and actually rather nice to drive. While they are not fast cars, they are refined once running and encourage a very relaxed style. The 250D is a 10valve 5-cyl, the 300D a 12valve 6-cyl; these were produced in saloon and estate forms until about 1993. Thereafter came the E250 diesel and E300 diesel with 4-valve heads, only the 300 being imported in estate car format. The w124s are about as well-suited to SVO running as you will ever find.

Thanks r129sl,

I am a little clearer now.

The 300 in the W210, I take it that is a turbo'd engine.
Is it the same basic engine as what was in the W124, but had a turbo installed?

How suited are the W210 to running on SVO ?

The W210 300TD is a great engine for SVO, just put it straight in the tank, the only thing you might experience at first is the need for a new fuel line or 2 as SVO clears them out and can cause old perishing ones to fail.

Not all w210 300s are turbocharged: the earliest are normally aspirated.

I think it's basically the same OM606 24v engine that was in the w124, only with a turbo.

The great difficulty with w210s is finding one that isn't rusty. They do exist: C & V Cars in Cambridgeshire recently sold a beautiful smoke silver E300 turbodiesel estate with a very full spec. Wish I'd bought it, tbh.

Thanks Walter and r129sl,

I don't know what it is, but I can't get to like teh W210, some thing about the front lights.

The W140, on the other hand looks glorious, just the way a MB should look, in my opinion.
I think I am spoilt between the W124 and the W140.

I think the non turbo'd W124 might be a bit hard pressed to pull a twin axle caravan at 100kw which is around 134 bhp.

The W140 with the turbo, (OM 606.961) with 130 kW (177 PS; 174 hp) makes a lot more sense for towing.
Sure the 1997–1999 W140 S 300 Turbodiesel is a heavier car, but I can cope with that.

Now to find the pitfalls, and any problems to be aware of with the W140.
Are there any serious issues to look out for, real deal breakers?

I actually feel quite good about what I have found out so far, and I feel the W140 is for me.

I see a lot of W140 are black in colour, having had black cars before, I am not really a big fan of black.

Do you feel silver is a good colour or are there other colours just as good?

Thanks to all, really, thanks.

No, all other colours are better! tongue out

I've not had a W140 but I believe the suspension is broadly similar to the W124's in which case checking the front ball joints for wear and top mount rubbers for cracking might be wise...

They're special cars, it's worth holding out for a good 'un.

The weight of the tow car is more important than the power of its engine when it comes to towing. The w124 diesels are leisurely but very strong. I don't expect they'd have any difficulty with a twin-axle caravan, assuming it is within weight limits. The estates have self-levelling rear suspension, which would be very useful, too.

Diesel w140s were not brought to the UK.

And the w124 was available with the turbodiesel in European left hand drive markets, the 250 12v, 300 12v and 300 24v all had a turbodiesel variant. These are reputedly amazing cars. So you have no excuse!

You have to buy on condition not colour at this age, I'm afraid.

I thought wing vents on a W124 indicated a turbo-diesel?

I used a N/A W124 300D for SVO with great success (with an additional inline fuel filter fitted before the fuel pre-heater and once the fuel strainer had been cleaned)

Had sell it as the missus was deeply uminpressed with the smell.

24v rather than turbo.

Turbos are LHD only.

Hi All,

What a great mix of information.
Thanks.

So perhaps it might be to difficult to buy a W140 3.0L 6 pot turbo diesel if they were never really a mainstream car in UK.
I was impressed with the power for towing.
I am not a fan of the W210, just the double head lights put me off.
May be I should just get "over it" an look for a good W210 3.0l 6 pot turbo diesel.

Alternatively, head back to square 1, and a W124 3.0l 6 pot turbo diesel.

I can't remember if the W124 engines are the same power output as the W140, I fear not.

w124 or w210 will both be fine. (as long as they're pre CDi - that would be an expensive cock-up!)

The 300D was 111bhp or c.130bhp N/A or c.170bhp F/I.

ETA - you won't find a diesel W140 in the UK (super-super-super-rare LHD import notwithstanding).

Thanks,

Looks like it is going to have to be a W210 series.

What was the last year they were made and sold in UK?

What is the latest year I can expect to find?

2002-03 were the last of the W210, but by then they were CDi engines. You can't use veg in one of them.

The cars you're looking for are E300.

Anything E220 or E270 or E320 is no good for what you need. Exactly when the switch came to CDi I'm not sure, but I'd estimate around 1999.

A W124 E300 Diesel will tow OK up to about 1000 Kg then they start to struggle with maintaining speed on hills. My diesel estate was OK with my trailer & BMW 2002 but wasn't really happy above 60 mph

The automatic cars have quite a big gap between 3rd and 4th and the engine drops out of the power band when you shift up. Above 60 it won't kick down to 3rd, and the power doesn't arrive till 3100 rpm, so either you run hills in 3rd at 4000 rpm (or more) or slow to about 50 in top

Max towing weight is 2100 Kg but you'd have to be very patient to want to try. There is no throttle response at all with a trailer on the back so you have to plan ahead

Brilliant cars, and very comfortable, but they lack torque. That's a shame because they are well-suited to towing with self-levelling suspension (estates) and a tiny turning circle (all models)

OP - now the gentleman above has arrived you should pump him for all the info you need.

You won't find anyone outside Stuttgart who knows more about the W124.
