Back up iphone contacts
Discussion
Get yourself a decent handset! The iphone is just an ipod that can make calls. Any decent handset has synch programmes with your pc to back up this and other details. There are some sim readers avaiable that may help you: http://www.datakits.co.uk/store/mobile-phone-acces... You just need to copy the contacts onto your sim card first

2 points.
1. Why would you want to copy smartphone contacts to a sim and hence lose just about all of the useful information in your contacts
2. Why would you bother to post just to moan about someone else's choice of handset? If you don't have an iPhone and cannot answer the question being asked or offer any useful advice then just STFU.
To the OP, as benjdr suggests or you can use Outlook if you have that on your computer. On the Info tab of the iPhone page in iTunes go to the bit about contacts and select what you want to use from the drop down.
Plug in, go into itunes, click in your iphone on the left column, then go into one of the tabs and it says sync contacts or back up contacts, select address book from drop down list. Then go into start, all progs, accessories, address book.
I just sold my iphone 3g after 2 years of faithful service, bought a htc magic instead, very very similar to the iphone, just does more, push gmail, online google talk constantly, multiple apps, good camera, removeable battery. I didn't think I was going to get along with the keyboard but it is just fine

I never bothered to select it either tbh.

Oh I had this. Very odd. The phone rings but the screen is blank. Don't send it off. Just plug it into your PC, go to iTunes, let it sync, then (on the iPhone page) press the "Restore" button. Follow the onscreen prompts and Robert is your mother's brother. Worked for me. Simples.Problem i have is the screen has stopped working this mornig for some reason.

HI sorry for the thread tangent but how do you find the Magic's multimedia capabilities? Is Iplayer /youtube as good as the iphone?I just sold my iphone 3g after 2 years of faithful service, bought a htc magic instead, very very similar to the iphone, just does more, push gmail, online google talk constantly, multiple apps, good camera, removeable battery. Any other things you have found to be better/inferior?

Browser is similar to iphone, keyboard is, music player is similar to the iphone and just as good, youtube is just as good, iplayer I would imagine it go be just as good.
What really pushes this phone onto me is that that GOOGLE developed Android and LEFT IT OPEN FOR DEVELOPERS ! Therefore there are so many useful apps add ons and the market is a really nice place. Whereas Apple hate developers playing on the apple software and they must seek permission etc etc before they start posting apps. Thats the realy beauty of this phone, it was been happily left open for developers.
And the fact it is made by Google
After so much faithful dedication towards the Apple brand, I called it a day and had had enough of their business tactics. I understand a business must make money and as much as possible, but blatently taking the piss infront of customers just isn't on imo. Thank you apple for setting a new "bar", but that was 2 years ago, you have made such little progress in that time, and you have left competitors catch up. It took you 2 years to get copy and paste for f
ks sakes. f
k you.Cheers IPWN
I am looking for a new phone and currently have a 2g iphone so the HTC Magic is in contention. I love the idea of android but currently find on screen typing a bit of a pain especially for email. Therefore I am hoping the N97 might be something new or failing that I will get an android (18 new phones apparently to be released this year) or the new Iphone (if sufficiently different)
I do understand the despair you have with Apple but I do love the media capabilities of the Iphone and use it for vid podcasts/tunes a lot.
This time next month it should be a little clearer with the possible announcements by Apple and the N97 being available.
Cheers again

Alternatively, if you just need the data and don't want to use iTunes or Apple stuff, then ssh onto the iPhone, the Address Book (as are all other data stores on the iPhone) is a simple SQLITE database. It's in ~/Library/AddressBook/AddressBook.sqlitedb (assuming logged in as mobile user - if you go in as root then you'll need /private/var/mobile/Library/AddressBook/AddressBook.sqlitedb).
This file can be copied wherever you want and the sqlite3 query utility be used to look through it. Doesn't make sense to copy the contacts to the SIM and lose all the valuable metadata - all the metadata (other than pictures attached to contacts, which are in a separate SQLITE database (AddressBookImages.sqlitedb).
For a 'toy' and apparently a crap handset, I think having all your PIM data in SQL databases that you can query in a powerful fashion is actually rather a hard-core feature... sure would like to see how the proprietary-OS Sony phones store their data... incidentally, anyone here know whether the Linux phones (android) use SQLITE for contact / calendar databases? Apple must have chosen the technology for a reason.
