BTW, they must have some impressive software to print from, at that resolution it should theoretically look dire.

Maybe. Normally a message comes up if the resolution is too low. But I've done one before with that sort of res and they've all turned out fine!

Sorry i can't contribute to the OP's question, but it was interesting to see the varying results and this one looks the best to me. Can you get to this level using photoshop CS3? (and some practice?!!)

This is about as basic as it gets with photo editing, Elements is more than capable of doing the job, though personally I'd look for a copy of an older full version of PS, you can get some serious bargains when new versions come out.
