Strange problem that started occuring yesterday. Have been installing, patching, fixing lots of stuff so not sure what change might have caused it unfortunately...

Using XP, after boot/login the system hangs for a minute or two (ie. explorer won't respond, apps won't start). Eventually all returns to normal but the following entry appears in the event log:

Event Type: Error
Event Source: Service Control Manager
Event Category: None
Event ID: 7000
Date: 02/09/2003
Time: 12:40:14
User: N/A
Computer: WORKSTATION
Description:
The Virtual PC Application Services service failed to start due to the following error:
The service cannot be started, either because it is disabled or because it has no enabled devices associated with it.

Can't find any information referring to this service, aside from a product called VirtualPC by Connectix which isn't installed. Can't see the named service in the service list.

Any ideas?

No idea apart from what you say.

You could check HKLMSoftwareCurrentControlSetServices and either delete the offending item or export it to a .REG file so you can put it back if need be.

Cheers,

Greg

Greg - didn't think of looking for the service there, ta muchly.

Plotloss - yup, Visual Studio .NET 2003 installed on this machine. .NET framework doing something fishy in the background?

This Virtual PC business is installed as part of VS.NET believe it or not...

Theres a fix, hang on...

Some bloke said:

Results of several hours search has uncovered that Virtual PC is a
Connectix product that appears to be incorporated in VisualStudio.NET.
A file called setupapi.log states "An unsigned or incorrectly signed
driver (c:program filesmicrosoft visualstudio
.netcompactframeworksdkplatman invpcappsv.inf) was installed for
Virtual PC Application Services. Error 0xe000022f: The third-party INF
does not contain digital signature information." Using Explorer, I
find platman in to be empty. Seems like it shouldn't be.

Then I found:

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=fh%3Ben-us%3Bvpcwin&x=14&y=11

Hopefully you will find some assistance in there...

Hi,

I have the very same problem, and it's making my PC unable to shutdown (after installing Win2K SP-4 - thanks, Bill). Do you know how to resolve this issue? I did follow the link to the MS site, but nothing relevant found there.

All ears! Thanks if you can help,

Ian

Thanks to pointers from Plotless and Greg, I think I've solved it...

Run regedit and locate the key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESYSTEMCurrentControlSetServicesVPCAppSvStart

Set its value to 3 - this switches it to manual rather than automatic startup. If your still having problems try setting to 4 which disables it.
