Windows Security Update 819696
Discussion
I have a laptop running Win2K Pro and have the Automatic Updates system running.
Almost daily the machine comes up with and update being available as in the title. Now I would expect it to run once but not every day.
I've phoned Microsoft who refused to help because I am a corporate customer - any one got any ideas why this should keep coming up, I click on install each time and it only takes a second to complete but still very annoying!

Are you running DirectX 9.0b? If so you should not need this update as it applies to an earlier version of DirectX. It's an MS problem on there side that you keep trying to install it. Best to turn off automatic updating till they sort it and manually check for updates periodically.
These are the effected software products that do need it.
Microsoft DirectX® 5.2 on Windows 98
Microsoft DirectX 6.1 on Windows 98 SE
Microsoft DirectX 7.0a on Windows Millennium Edition
Microsoft DirectX 7.0 on Windows 2000
Microsoft DirectX 8.1 on Windows XP
Microsoft DirectX 8.1 on Windows Server 2003
Microsoft DirectX 9.0a when installed on Windows Millennium Edition
Microsoft DirectX 9.0a when installed on Windows 2000
Microsoft DirectX 9.0a when installed on Windows XP
Microsoft DirectX 9.0a when installed on Windows Server 2003
Microsoft Windows NT 4.0 with either Windows Media Player 6.4 or Internet Explorer 6 Service Pack 1 installed.
Microsoft Windows NT 4.0, Terminal Server Edition with either Windows Media Player 6.4 or Internet Explorer 6 Service Pack 1 installed.

Cheers FWD.
I have just run the Directx Diagnostic Tool and it tells me I am running 9.0a - should I upgrade to the b version?
If you are running 9.0a on Windows ME, Win2000, XP or Windows Server 2003 then you do need it but it sounds as though it's failing when automatically downloading. Go to the microsoft downloads site and manually download it from there. Or upgrade to DirectX 9.0b on the same site, details on manually installing the patch here, but you can find DirectX9.0b at the same place
Go to DirectX on the left, then type the "819696" number in to the keyword search and pick the right one for your machine from 2-6.

Edited to say, just notice you're running 2000 so yes you do need it
