Its basically just a methodology.. (I am sitting the Exam on Friday)..

Yes you can learn it from a book, however I'd reccommend some level of taught course/exam prep as the practitioner exam is based on how to apply the method to a scenario in a way the examiners want to see it, so you could easily waste the £150 exam fee in writing reams of stuff, just in the wrong style.

Edited to add:

With regards to using it in the workplace, once you have understood the fundamentals of it, you will probably find that you have been using aspects of it for years (if you a re a project manager) just with a different title/style.

I have been working with it for about two years on and off, and to be fair as long as the other people you are working use it too it is most helpful, however if you are the only one and trying to impose it on others, its often a waste of time.

Cheers
Matt.

Courses vary.. a full 5 day practitioner is about £1350 plus VAT.. I paid half myself and my Company paid the other half.

I reckon the actual qualification has just one use: IF you're looking for a Job. However getting to grips with the method just from a book or something can prove beneficial in many project environments as long as everyones using it.

Edited to add.. this isn't just for Govt Projects, you can apply it to any project scenario, be it software development, construction, manufacturing etc. etc..

Cheers
Matt.

My wife did the 5 day course and a 1 day exam prep course and she passed the exam. She told me to read the manual and do the exam prep day. I passed too.
It is not a "follow this method and we can do it cheap" but more of a "we can track why the project is going off the rails" With a good implementation it is very easy to spot who is a work shy, sack of lard
