Right,

Got my modem, rigged it up to my 4 port router, plugged in PC. All good.

Modem refuses to talk to BT Broadband.

I've run IPCONFIG on the old modem and get two addresses and two masks.

When I run the setup utility on my new modem its got different names for everything. I should have done some screen shots, but forgot.

There's also the problem that, according to my housemate, BT didn't set a dial-up password on his account, but the modem won't let me leave the password field blank.

Does anyone have ANY advice?

I'm at my wits end, this has dragged for ages now.

What OS are you running? Only ask as I had setup problems with BT Broadband on XP which needed additional fixes to be downloaded from the BT Voyager site (not a site that's publicly known and they have to give you a username/password to download the fixes) BT

My password is always left blank as stated in the booklet that came with my pack. Always works that way, never a problem.

The password might be something to do with additonal services such as a POP3 mail service, which I don't use, I just bought the basic conection.

The password is blank with the old modem, but the new modem holds the username and password in its memory, and it won't allow me to submit the info with the password field blank.

I've tried to use 'space' as a password for now, but until I can get it to connect at all I won't know if it works.

Alan, what make and model of modem is it? Some of the newer DSL modems are really routers and sometimes configuration changes are necessary to get them to work.

MRI AR-504 I think. It is a multi-function, bridge router/modem.

I've got the configuration screen working (at home, not here) and tried to enter the relevant data but it doesn't correspond to that of the old modem.

(If that makes sense)

I have a netgear DM602 ADSL Modem,

I had a few small teething problems trying to get connected to BT but nothing to do with the password.

Have you tried to release all IP address's and other setting on your old modem before you plug in the new one.

Also I have just been to the config of my connection and found that the connection works when a password is put in, but by default i leave the password field blank

How do I relesae IP adds?

When you say 'a password' do you mean THE password, or just anything you type is accepted?

Alan is it definitely MRi? I can find reference to a d-link 504 but not an MRi 504.

Well anyhoo, I've had a scout around some of the broadband forums and it seems that any password should work as it's not looking for a password in the first place. The general consensus seems to be that if there's a problem with connection it's probably with the IP.

I've put in a couple of links to relevant threads.

Sorry I can't be more help, but I can't find any specs on the router you have!

Hope these help.

Thanks Evil.

I've decided to return both the router and the modem and get one I've got some experience of.

Can't be bothered with this over-complicated garbage.
