i have a nearly new advent pc with a separate cd-rw and i'm trying to put my pics onto disc which has been ok for the last month or so , but now when i try to get windows xp to put things onto the disc it says that there is not a disc in the drive even though i have put a new cd-rw disc in , i even tried a cd-r disc but it seems that the computor just cant see the disc in the drive , and i have tried the nero program that came with the pc but still the same , what am i doing wrong and could it be that the cd rewriter has gone tits up

Could be you've got a batch of dodgy disks - some drive won't recognise 80 min disks, or some sketchy makes - what drive and disks are you using?

Also download the very latest drivers for you drive and install them, or re-install the current ones. It might just be a Windows glitch.

My CD writer once packed up like that and didnt work again. Although as mentioned could be cheap disks that it doesnt like. Can it reconise a normal cd?

when running nero with XP you need the latest version (version 5 at least)

get the latest drivers as above, check your connections, i know it sounds obvious, but it happens to all of us!

I have Nero on my XP-based system. If I put a blank CD into the drive, and try to look at it through Windows Explorer, the computer fails to recognise the CD at all, just as you suggest. However, Nero "sees" the blank CD without problem, and I can then write to it. I'm not sure this helps, other than to clarify that a blank CD won't normally be recognised prior to burning data.

thanks people i tried some of this and then phoned the help line that sold me the pc and after uninstalling and running different discs in safe mode the computor still cannot see a disc in the drive and thats useing nero and the windows xp wizard and i was then told that the cd rewriter is at fault as it cannot see a disc. so an engineer is coming around tomorrow to replace said item , so thanks anyway for your replies.......
